Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master, released in Japan as The Super Shinobi II (ザ・スーパー・忍Ⅱ, Zā Sūpā Shinobi Tsū?), is an action game developed and published by Sega for the Mega Drive/Genesis console that was released in 1993. It is the direct sequel of the 1989 game The Revenge of Shinobi

Ok this is what I was talking about. I just call it revenge 2 cause thats what it is really.

As far as the MD was concerned, Shadow Dancer was the follow-up to Revenge Of/Super Shinobi, no?
Shadow Dancer was more of a side story really. I didn't rate it at all, but only played the C64 version. The MD version had very different levels to the arcade I think.

There was no Revenge of Shinobi 2, you are correct. The sequel was Shinobi III in the west, and I think called Super Shinobi 2 in Japan.

EDIT: somebody beat me to it by 30 seconds!

Wikipedia rules! But fails to mention that there was a character called Shinobi (or was it Mushashi?) in Phantasy Star 3.

I think if shadow dancer was to be a sequal to any shinobi it would have to be the first shinobi. Especially the megadrive shadow dancer as it plays very similar.

The megadrive version of shadow dancer is very good drmick! you should try it sometime.

My original post was quite vague, but i have played it. Borrowed it from a friend for a weekend once. Could get to the final boss, but couldn't defeat him

When I said I only played the C64 version, I meant of the arcade levels.

Anyhow, I still maintain it wasn't that good, but then, despite my love for it, I always felt Revenge was slightly over-rated by magazines at the time. The original Shinobi too is perhaps over-rated. Maybe we all have a soft spot for ninja games? I recall that one Amiga magazine give Last Ninja 3 a 100% review score.

I dunno. I'd say that score is a bit harsh

Couldn't agree more the 1st level made my jaw drop with the best parallax scrolling I had ever seen at the time and the explosion effects were just jaw dropping , and my chin hit the floor when I 1st saw that Water Fall backround.

The best game on the MD imo , by far the best in series , and the only SEGA platform game that game anywhere near Mario IV for sheer gaming perfection . Playing Revenge on the MD on Christmas morning , just me and my Dog (ever one else in bed) is one of my happiest gaming memories and moments.

Your spectacles must be opaquely rose-coloured!

                        Best Shinobi game? Yes.

Best platform game on MD? Nope.

Best game on Megadrive? Definitely not. Maybe best game in 1989 on MD.

'Bout 15 minutes seems a decent length for an arcade-style game with no savegame facility, IMO.

How does Shinobi III/Super Shinobi II compare to Revenge of Shinobi/Super Shinobi?

For some reason my XBox doesn't like the ROM so I'm thinking of getting it on VC, but last time I did that for the same reason I downloaded Eswat which is nowhere near as good as I remember

Shinobi III/Super Shinobi II is probably the better game, but it doesnt have the music and style of Revenge/Super, which I favour.
