Been playing the original Phantasy Star this week, I can't remember it being this hard though, a couple of times I didn't know where to go next and had to resort to Gamefaqs, can't remember getting stuck all those years ago when I first played it but I suppose I just persevered with it more as a kid.
Still an incredible game for it's time though, especially seeing as it came out around the same time as the first Final Fantasy and Dragon's Quest, it just seems light years ahead of those in regards to graphics, setting, plot and gameplay. Makes you wonder why the series has never been as big as those 2 games, especially with Phantasy Star 4 being one of the greatest RPG's ever. I'd love a Phantasy Star 5, shame Sega seem more content with churning out the Online series these days.
Also been playing Thunderhawk on MCD which is still an amazing game after all this time, the soundtrack is still fantastic as well.
And lastly another Core Design MCD game, Battlecorps. I can remember this being far too hard back in the day, was hoping that playing it again as an adult it might be a bit easier but no chance, I'm probably worse at it if anything.

I'm seriously thinking of giving up on LoZ II Adventures of Link - it's just such hard going in a repetitive way that it's no fun.
Every time you lose all 3 lives (the max you can have at the point I'm at) you're sent all the way to the temple at the start of the game and have to work your way back re-killing everything all over again (not always easy) just to get to the point you died previously.
The original LoZ had a similar save/continue system but the map size and difficulty level made it bearable, but here this is getting to be just too much like hard work.
I'm not one to wimp out usually and to prove it I spent a two hour sesison
not beating the 7th Chapter of the the FX Zero G Story mode. Wasn't bored or frustrated (much) - great game, tough but still great fun.

One of my mates had a DC with a huge collection of pirated games which created a problem. So much choice meant he never stuck with any one title for long enough to really appreciate it.
Personally I don't fancy being in that situation.
Also I wouldn't fancy seeing low resolution MD games upscaled to monitor resolutions.
Anyway back on topic. It's been a Tiger Heli week for me with both the MD and Saturn versions getting a look in. Really impressed with them both. Arguably moreso with the MD version. It's really tight and the enemy bullets are accurate and quick moving. Very nice.
Also been spending some time with MD Raiden Trad. I was a bit dissapointed with it at first but that will probably be just because I enjoyed the Jaguar and PlayStation versions so much. The MD version is just as good to play but, obviously, looks a bit rough.

Been playing nothing (retro or current) but Tempest 2000.
I always enjoyed the original arcade and 3000 on the Nuon but never got round to playing 2000. Always wanted to, but could never justify buying a system for one game ...
Until I saw a sealed copy for sale on here. I bought it, sourced a Jaguar, and I'm having the time of my gaming life. It's just the perfect evolution of old-school gameplay and I can't leave it alone.
You get used to the way a lot of modern games are, emulating the looks and sounds of real life ... but here is a pure game world ... neon colours, particle bursts, great blaster sounds and explosions.
Most would agree Tempest 2000 ticks a lot of boxes, but I think one of the most amazing things about it is the perfectly tuned difficulty/learning curve. The early levels teaching you the basics and getting you used to the controls before drip feeding the other stuff ... teaching you step by step, layer by layer, the skills you'll need to learn and combine in order to get good.
My high score table tells the story ... scoring that little bit more, getting that little bit further every time I play.
In recent years I've sold every single 'retro' console I had, clearing cupboard space and streamlining, yet here I am with a new/old console, one game and no regrets whatsoever.
