The sad thing is I completed the whole game 5 times when I was a lad. Can't even get half way through it these days

Zelda II is a good game, there's much to like. But I've found as I've progressed and the game has become tougher that having only 3 lives before you're sent right back to the start point an utterly depressing gameplay feature.

It's that forced repetition going through unavoidable learn by rote areas and random fights which damage or kill Link before even you arrive back at the point you died previously that really raise my hackles. These are some of the very reasons I've always hated traditional stye RPGs.

A simple saveable checkpoint at the start of each temple and a reduction or a way of avoiding the random attacks when off path and I'd probably be singing this game's praises.

All I can say now is that you and other gamers back in 1987 must have been a different breed capable of tolerating gameplay design that to my mind does nothing but suck out much of the fun.

Shenmue. I only got to disc 2 in the sequel when I played it back in 2001 so I decided to start again. I watched the digest movie on disc 4 and decided to play the first one all over again. On checking my save files from 2001 I found that they were in 50Hz, so I've started again in 60Hz- our big TV must've been rubbish back then.

I think it was just down to much simpler times Back then a game would have to last you months or end or even to the next birthday/Xmas so the frustrating parts that needed to be replayed just added to the length in a way. Yes we were all nuts!

O yeah James, translated all the way for me..At the moment just working my way thro it but so far it's great.I can now appreciate the time and effort that these guys have put in to make this game playable for the likes of me..

There is no way in hell i would have played this and enjoyed it the same if it hadn't been translated. I take it you have finished it then??

Garou: Mark of the Wolves. Finding it:

                      a) superb
                      b) brilliantly animated
                      c) tough as nails
                      d) confusing

T.O.P and Just Defence I'm getting the hang of, but there seems to be a lot to this game that I just don't get. Is it a bit convoluted or is it me?

                        Elemental Master – Megadrive

Used to fly through this, getting stuck beating the woman who transforms into a Spider... I'll get there eventually!

The music is awesome on this game!

I've been playing Final Fight CD, the Japanese version. Maybe it's just me, but the game is much harder than I remember it! I can manage to get to Stage 5 but that's it. Such a different focus compared with SoR too. SoR puts a bit more emphasis on backflips and other such special moves, and of course your 'A button' special. None of that here, reliance on pure fisty-cuffs. And once you're on the ground, they don't just walk away and let you back up.

                          A hard game.

Just about exhausted my interest in XBox Yager - strange game and nothing like I expected. Finished it, ending up having greatly enjoyed parts of it, hating others. So then I decided to go back and try for 100% mission stars. Highly challenging criteria in some cases but I got about half way through again before having had enough.

Problem is on the second play through all the flaws you tolerated now seem exaggerated and you notice new faults you missed first time.

Principal gripe I have is the appalling slowdown in some levels. Quite how some people had this game rated highly on its graphics without considering mentioning the, at times, flick book level frame rate I can't think. It has, easily, some of the worst slowdown of any game I've played on the XBox. Yet at other times the graphics do impress and run smoothly enough.

At home again and currently I'm having a go on the original PS1 tekken and trying to unlock all the characters. Just got King left to beat it with also been playing abit of Tekken Tag Tournament on the PS2 as well.

Might drag out the Saturn or MD later as I wouldn't mind playing a game starting with "Shining" in the title.
