Oi! I hope that comment wasn't directed at me!! I'm as much a SFC fan as I am Megadrive, and I am as much a Megadrive fan as I am Neo Geo. I like the PCE just a little less than the aforementioned but these are all my favourite consoles

And what might these obscure hyped games be?

There are a few snes games that aren't very well known. Some people, for reasons I can understand, like to focus on the more obscure games - or ones that are rarish. I think a lot of those types of games are given a mystique, that makes them much more alluring than they really deserve to be.

I've noticed a negative, sort of dismissive attitude from certain people regarding easy to obtain games. It's a common attitude at retro forums. Talk about games that are truely AAA classics - and you'll get a mild response; talk about some game that didn't get recognition back in the day - and people get excited.

Rendering Ranger is one of them. It's not a good game; simple as that. I would much rather talk about ContraIII for the millionth time.

If someone doesn't say they like the snes more than the mega drive, they are definitely a Sega fanboy

I like the MD, and I love the SNES. I like hearing that other people rate the snes as the best console ever made. It's something I wholeheartedly believe. The snes and its best games have a timeless quality. Even the best MD stuff, does feel really old. I still really enjoy MD, PCE, Neo Geo, Amiga games, though.

16-bit is where it's at for fun, thrilling games.

Im glad to hear that. At first I thought it was a reference towards me talking about Whirlo and I must apologise! I had a long day at work and have been a bit grumpy :P

Rendering Ranger did get a looking a while back on my Tototek flash card and I was left quite disapointed. After seeing the price tag, I (foolishly) expected something amazing.
It had all the basics to be another great Trenz style Turrican shooter, but managed to mess it up. The developers seemed to have lost the plot once the oversized pre rendered sprites became the obvious focus during the development. At least in my opinion...

On the note of obscure, two titles that must be mentioned over and over again for pure 16-bit greatness though are Magical Pop'n & DoReMi Fantasy: Milon's DokiDoki Adventure! Its such a shame they never left Japan.

          And finally...

I couldnt agree anymore. Once 3d graphics arrived on the scene, it became a huge race between the companies to create the most realistic models imaginable.
Gameplay? Nah, no need the visuals are more important... (This doesnt apply to every game mind you!)

C'mon mate, you can hardly bemoan the odd Sega fanboy on this board when you're such a blatant fanboy yourself. Just because people have different opinions to you, it does not make their opinions any less legitimate. So Megadrive games feel old to you? Great. They should do - they're the best part of two decades old. And let me guess: Starfox still looks great today whereas Virtua Racing looks tired and dated; the avant-garde, abstract backgrounds of Super Mario World make Sonic 2's cartoonish visuals look childish and silly. Do you see what I'm getting at? Games for the SNES are just as old as Megadrive games and I know this might offend you, but they also look old these days. Just not to you.

Beauty, as they say, is in the eye of the beholder.

Been blasting through Super Metroid today. As an experience, it's just as fun on a saturday morning as it is at night, in the dark with the sound up. I'd put it up there with Silent Hill and such, as one of the most atmospheric games ever made. Might do Starfox next, as I've never ever managed to defeat Andross. The rest of the game is easy, and I can complete Lylat Wars in about an hour, but with Starfox on snes, I always come unstuck on the last boss.

Me too. Sounds like an aggressive marketing campaign for sanitary towels!

Almost finished Metroid now. Can't remember the names of the areas, but it's basically the last section before you go kill motherbrain. 3 and a half hours so far, which is not bad considering my last save was nearer 7 hours (it was the first time I ever finished it). Actually, this will only be the second time I've finished it. I'm not going for 100% or anything like that though. I wish I had the big box pal version; I really don't care much for the japanese box artwork. Even the cartridge label looks a bit ****.

                      Metriod

I have been playing the USA version tonight but no box or instructions with mine, great sound effects.

PAL Super Metroid has the damn subtitles on it, I'm sure they could have executed that a bit better hehe. Great game though.

Just beat Super Metroid, after spending ages last night trying to beat Ridley, the sonuvabitch. I nailed him this morning though, after realising I was supposed to use all my missiles and **** on him. Finished in 4 hours 35 minutes with 51%, so Samus took her helmet off at least This game has some of the best 16bit music and visual effects ever. I don't think I will ever get tired of the speed boost move, it looks so cool and makes you feel powerful That eerie vocal music is also rather spine chilling, especially during the credits and ending screens. Super Metroid must have one of the most explosive and apocalyptic ending sequences ever, noe that I think of it. Man, now I want to play Metroid II and Metroid Fusion, which I have never completed, but there's no time for that! I will have a think on which snes classic to play next.
