The PS1 being at 7 in a poll that they 'have selected and ranked the most influential systems in the history of gaming' is ****ing flatout wrong.

Yeah, and I agree with some of Leon's arguments. My personal list would be:

        NES
        Atari 2600
        PS1
        SNES
        360

for various reasons of importance in the scope of gaming in general...
Lie with passion and be forever damned...

PS1 should be in the top 5 really

in terms of how important they were to gaming:

          1: NES
          2: Atari 2600
          3: PS1
          4: Snes
          5: Megadrive

Atari 2600 would've been top were it not for some of the awful awful ports

PS1 ultimately brought gaming into the mainstream and gave us the first truly cinematic games. So it edges ahead of the 16bit era.

          *edit*

Megadrive goes behind Snes because ultimately it created fewer classics but it still deserves credit for the most hotly contested console war we've had.

The Dreamcast is very good, but.. it wasn't a revolution. It delivered much nicer 3D - and online gaming, but.. SEGA didn't get things right in the marketing and third-party support. Also, there weren't enough AAA games - and Sega killed the machine before it got a chance to be pushed to its limits.
I'm not being funny but just how many AAA games did the N64 have? You could count them on your fingers. Then ask just how many were all new and original? Errr, Golden Eye, Perfect Dark and a few others. Apart from that it was the same old Mario this Mario that, Zelda this Zelda that, Metroid this Metroid that and so on. Dreamcast had many AAA games that were all new and original such as Shenmue, Jet Set Radio, Samba De Amigo, Crazy Taxi and so on. It was also the first console with online gaming out of the box, the first with video chat, the first with live chat during gameplay, the first console with a successful MMRPG (or whatever you call them), the first console with truly 100% Arcade perfect ports thanks to Naomi. (Saturn doesn't count due to loading times of STV games). Dreamcast in Japan was the fastest selling console of all time until the PS2 came out. That must say something towards it's credibility?

Sure, the N64 was the first "real" 3D system but it was flawed in so many ways. I'd rather play 3D on a PlayStation or Saturn. Yes, it may not look as solid but at least it's clear.

Shouldn't '3D brilliance' mean most of the games run better than what looks like a boggy 12 frames a second? It was a genuinely terrible piece of hardware.

In all honesty I think the Playstation 2 is the best console of all time. It still lasts, and has about every single genre covered (plus, it plays Ps1). The only downside to it is that the DC was around sooner and it had stolen the graphical thunder already.

When it comes to the first Playstation, its as much as a landmark as the NES was. The NES introduced console gaming in general, the PSX introduced it to a much broader and older audience. This is why Nintendo and Sega failed at the time, as they didn't expand their targets.

When it comes to nostalgia, I love the Saturn, Playstation 1, Neo-Geo and Dreamcast the most. I think those 4 are the best you can have and I slightly prefer them over the legendary SNES and MD.

I think the problem with the Nintendo 64 was that the hardware had been in gestation so long, its games did look visually outdated by the time it went on sale. I remember back in '96 thinking, man, good games but horrible murky graphics...

If you were to ask me which console I'd rather be stuck on a desert island with, assuming I could have any game of my choice, I'd probably go with the PS2 due to it's massive catalogue of titles that covers pretty much all bases.

Yet that doesn't change the fact that I'd probably rate the Saturn and Dreamcast higher if I had to compile a top 25.

It is difficult to make a 'top 25' like this, and would create nothing but controversy because it really depends on which consoles we have the best memories of. My early teenage years were playing on my Saturn during 97/98 clutching a copy of SSM, yet many others had different experiences and thus cannot relate to this.

I love it, Wii before Gamecube, why is it down at 16th?! So upgrade the chipset, put it in a white box and add some waggling then ship with terrible 3rd party games makes it so much better.

NES at number one!! It was good at the time I wouldn't say it was better than the SNES. I see they went with the safe choice of adding the SNES/Megadrive together :P

Also Dreamcast needs to be higher, and the PS2 is too high IMO. As for the Atari 2600 at 2nd place these guys are having a laugh.

same old mario? i think not.

same old zelda? again certainly not

                        same old metroid?

Metroid on N64? hmmm... me thinks yakamo did not even have an N64!? lol

The N64 had arguably the greatest 3 games of all time - Mario 64, Zelda Ocarina Of Time & Goldeneye.

As for original games - Perfect Dark, Sin & Punishment, Waverace, Blast Corps, Diddy Kong Racing, Banjo Kazooie, Conkers BFD, Super Smash Bros, 1080 Snowboarding, Paper Mario...

Not to mention awsome titles like Pilotwings 64, Starfox 64, F-Zero X, Mario Golf, Mario Tennis, Majoras mask, Goemon 64, Mario Kart 64, Exitebike 64, ISS...

The Dreamcast on the other hand had mostly just arcade ports, Albeit very good ones.

Dont get me wrong, I love the dreamcast!! but there are easily more AAA titles on the N64 than on Dreamcast.

I think you're bang on with that, mate. The old "blurry graphics" argument has become a tired, fanboy-ish clich?. The quality of some of the best N64 games is undeniable, some are still untouchable even today. Super Mario 64? Ocarina of Time? GoldenEye? Those 3 alone changed their respective genres, forever.

It souldn't been seen that way because I never meant it to be. What I wanted to say is that the N64 was not as good as many make it out to be were the DC is a lot better than people make it out to be. I've owned an N64 in the past, in fact I've owned a few but apart from the same handful of games I just couldn't find any appeal in blured out over chunky polygons and no decent fighting games (No, Killer Instinct Gold isn't in the same class as the great fighters ). Even stuff such as Goemon 64 just weren't a patch on the colourful clean looking Super Famicom games. Just go and play N64 Goemon then give the SFC games a try and then tell me which is more fun. I bet you'll go for the SFC games.

And how many are AAA titles? NOt all 10 or at least not all 10 in my opinion.

I've never liked ANY Nintendo IP apart from F-Zero. This isn't a Nintendo hate chip on my shoulder by any means. I just don't like them to the realms of fanboyizim. SFC Metroid bored me in the end, Super Mario all Stars (with all games) was fun but the character does nothing for me. Zelda on the SFC? Yes, good but I personally thought Final Fantasy 4, 5 and 6 were better for plot and story as well as Chrono Trigger and Secret of Manner 2 being more interesting in the Action RPG sense.

I don't hate Nintendo at all. In my life I've owned many Nintendo consoles. In fact my top 10 would be like this.

                              1 Saturn
                              2 Super Famicom
                              3 PC Engine / PC-CD
4 Mega Drive / Mega CD
                              5 Dreamcast
                              6 Wii / Game Cube
                              7 DS
                              8 PSX
                              9 Neo Geo
                              10 Master System

So as you can see, my 2nd best console of all time is a Nintendo system and I currently play Wii an awful lot. I just don't see the N64 being a great system.
