Why do people love Shenmue?

It's actually the worst list we've ever done in terms of (**** there's a lot of good DC stuff). Only one shooter made the list, no one has guessed the number one and there's going to be a few where people go "what the ****". I will tell you this though, Sonic Adventure is not in the top ten

If it's not JSR, your list is wrong and your magazine needs recalling

Id Put Skies Of Arcadia as my number 1.
Ecco The Dolphin would be number 2.
Sonic Ad would be number 3.
Res Code Veronica mabee number 4.
Powerstone 2 would be at number 5.
Shenmue would come in at number 6
Soul Calibre would be at 7.
Phantasy Star i would put at 8.
Ready To Rumble would be at 9
and Oratorio Tangram would be at 10


Im not a shmup fan and mainly prefer rpg or adventure style games so thats why theres no smups in my top list.

It's tricky. You don't want to put too many shumps, fighters, racing games etc but there's so much good stuff on the DC. I personally wasn't too keen on some of the positions, but Stu put a good argmument across for them, so I was happy to let them slide. On a totally unrelated note I spent all day at work playing Space Channel 5. It's still awesome.

F355 was good but got dull quickly. The overall experience was more suited to an arcade as it was too limited.

Skies of Arcadia is an excellent game, but I was less bothered by the sheer amount of random battles back then. These days, it would annoy me quite quickly. No doubting that it's an awesome game though.

I think the fact that each one of us could create a Dreamcast top 10 and they'd be completely different is a testament to the sheer amount of great games on the format - and you don't even have to go import to experience most of them. I'd definately be putting Shenmue, Resident Evil: Code Veronica and Skies of Arcadia without thinking twice. I'm a weird one who prefers Virtua Fighter 3tb over Soul Calibur, but they're both top 10 worthy in my eyes.

Sonic Adventure is harder to decide. I agree with the comment that when we first saw Emerald Coast, it really felt like the next-gen was here - I felt the same way too. Time has done it no favours however, and it's flaws became apparent pretty quickly, and once the thrill of Sonic in 3D wore off, it became clear that it wasn't up with the prequels on a quality level. In terms of significance however, it was hugely important, and gave me many many hours of enjoyment, and I still get a buzz playing the game.

I guess the topic is going on a tangent now.

Indeed. My initial pull at the time was that apparently it was something akin to Panzer Dragoon Saga.

And while it had some quality, the random battles took le piss and in reality was nowhere near that level of excellence of a gone generation.

I think the DC is looked upon by many with very rose tinted glasses. While it was a great machine it never fulfilled its potential and there were less AAA titles than I think people remember. Out of the less Successfull console in history I think it had the most amount of terrible titles, more than the Cube, N64, Saturn and say the Xbox (latter shortish lifespan)
The DC has a great collection of Shooters and 2D fighters but not lot of anything else. Driving games were all pretty poor bar a select few. Tokyo Highway, Le Mans, Ferrari about the best but the first 2 flopped and the last is limited. MSR isnt that good at all.
Skies is about the best normal RPG but its not amazing, as said too many battles make it hard to swallow. most platformers were poor, Sonic was certainly a lot fun but it had a lot of crap parts also.
The system has a lot of overall good games. Soul Reaver, MDK, Virtua Tennis to name just a few along with some absolute gems including Powerstone, Jet Set Radio, Phatasy Star..

For me the DC is a really good console. When it was great it was amazing but it wasnt often enough. Its not really fair though due to its short lifespan. Go through this list and see if anyone else feels the same.
