Continuing my Argento viewing I finally got round
to watching Phenomena, a 1985 film staring Jennifer Connelly and a small role from Donald Pleasence and a monkey. Bonkers film about a girl who can communicate with insects and uses this power to help track down a serial killer at a girls boarding school. Soundtrack is all over the place, but is always good to hear Iron Maiden. Well worth a watch, but it is mad.

This film along with Suspiria inspired the SNES game Clock Tower. Maybe you should check it out. I've never seen those films though because I ****ing hate Italian horror.

          Here's the rundown:

          Brave
My god, whilst it's passable enough, it's by far the worst of all of Pixar's films. Completely devoid of charm, thrills or any sense of involvement. Make it 2D and it could be a Disney Direct-to-DVD release. Pick up your game Pixar.

          Men in Black 3
Watched it again and still quite enjoyed it

          American Pie: Reunion
One or two nice bits but never goes beyond what the previous films or the D2D releases did really. Not much point in its being.

          Bourne Legacy
Utterly pointless and too long, everyone does a decent job in it but it needs a more compelling story and more action if it's to continue as a series.

          Resident Evil: Retribution
The newest 5th installment. Choppy as hell for the first third bar a decent Suburbia sequence. Then it explains what's going on and it goes very Resi1 movie, the last third is action heavy and has a ridiculous set up for Resi6. It's passable but won't convert any and is running out of steam now.

Italian horror is an acquired taste. Our lass hates it. I find Argento films oddly compelling though, most of the serial killer films are ace as their are no real clues to who the killer is, they seem to just decide in the last reel. I do love the sense of style in the films and the prolonged death scenes are sometimes incredible. Modern horror seems to rely on the shocks, yet Argento films give you this extended scene of a murder. The music is also ace.

Suspiria is silly and (at times) stomach-churning, but never really scary. However, the music will remain in my head until the day I die. It's DISTINCTIVE.

That is ace, but the music for Tenebre is where it's at.

                  Justice! Haha

Seriously though, the tracking shot to accompany that tune in the movie is a classic of all times. I think I've nearly seen all the Argento flicks now and a few of the Bava ones, they are well worth it.

I watched the original 80s version of Fright Night - and really enjoyed it. It's quite a moody film, and full of fun and thrills. I will award it 4/5.

The use of music in Tenebrae is best described as an aquired taste. The film is generally really good, but the music is just weird and pretty much destroys the atmosphere of the film. Its a dark and creepy film and the weird hyper bouncy electro soundtrack goes completely against what the film is about, its just very bizzare.

^Surely you jest, sire? The music in Tenebre is what defines it as a movie, a kind of glitzy 80s precursor to that age celebrated in Vice City, the music needs to be that way, and it also happens to be superb electronic music. Changing the soundtrack to Tenebre would effectively castrate its awesome impact. It's Dazzy Silver's best flick (just shading Inferno) and has some of the Goblin crew's very best work....though my fave tune of all is this from Suspiria:

Any man who doubts the power of Goblin is not a man worth conversing with!

Well I watched about 3/4 of it and not for me, the pregnant other half wanted to see it and thought oh we'll for an easy life. For me channing Tatum just can't act but he is company of a bunch of people who also cant act

There are some boobs but its just balls balls and more balls in fact it's quite homo-erotic in some ways and I actually felt quite uncomfortable watching it which was weird, anyway it's gayer than flash Gordon

2/10 or if you bat for the other team 9 testicles out of 10

Youre right it does define the film, and it turns it into what is a great little thriller with a good plot and some brilliant set piece kill scenes into a strange oddity. And yeah, you're right, what the music does work as a pre cursor to the glitzy soundtrack of eighties movies in general. But then that's not a good thing as generally a lot of 80's soundtracks are intrustive and tacky, which is not what you want from the music in a horror thriller. In fact it's not what you want at all. The Embaressing movie soundtracks of that decade are just one of the many reasons why the 80's are known as the decade of cheese.

Insidious - didn't realise until after I'd watched this that it was made by the Saw dudes. I really liked it. Knew nothing about it prior to watching it. A few scares, creepy enough for a horror film. I liked how it relied on dread, suspense and fear rather than gore.

Madagascar 3 - kids loved it, I loved it. Great silly kids movie. The 3D was excellent. Quite a few laugh out loud moments. Will definitely be adding this bluray to the kids' collection.

The Thing - the prequel. I had my doubts about this film as I love the Carpenter original. But I was completely wrong. Really well done, as someone said above, almost the same as the original but with enough differences for me. I really liked the seque into the next film, would've

loved a cameo of MacReady in there but alas no such treat.

                              .

There is nothing wrong with cheese.
