Martin's songs seem to have lost a bit of his blues influence, which is a shame. I'd say that the real shift seems to have occurred when they moved away from sampling and layers and back into pure synth territory, though. I remember a Martin quote from somewhere where he said that one of the foundations of a good song lies in the ability to strip it back to the bare essentials and still have it sound good, otherwise it's just a series of odd but pretty noises with a few lyrics stringing it together. Unfortunately a lot of the recent Mode output seems to have forgotten this rule, although I'd concede that Wrong justifies hope for some good songs in future.
