    Woohooo!

I like that they basically just took a T-Rex, made it bigger and gave it longer arms

I watched the trailer four times in a row, I think. YT one is blurry but the Apple Trailers one is a lot nicer for anyone who wants to see individual drops of water around the pterodactyl.

The director says that due to JP2 and 3 taking part on separate islands the new film takes the opportunity to completely ignore them acting as a direct continuation, would have expected at least some reference to JP2 and opposition to a full fledged park opening considering the public knowledge of what happened with the initial park and a T-Rex running rampant on San Fran which would surely colour public perception

I would've preferred he just ignored them, ideally with massive continuity errors, so as to make it easier to forget they existed.

"It was Colin's pitch to, you know, just watch that first dinosaur one with that guy in it and then just, like, copy it." The man is a genius.

Theres no need to address the last 2 movies. Afterall JP4 is set 20 years later is it that far stretched to suggest most have been forgetten considering Joe public forget news stuff that happened a month ago?

I like the angle they've gone for where the newer generation are just not entertained by Dinosaurs and its like, "Yawn! What else ya got?" Makes the new dinosaur plot device easier to swallow. Still wish they went with human/dino hybrid plot, maybe if this is successful enough. Really like the idea of a dirty dozen type movie.

Looks like the new entry will have one returning character from the original...

The director has said that if Universal moves forward on a fifth film he will remain involved but won't direct, he says different directors could bring different styles to the series.

Having seen the extended trailer for this I am super excited!

Also, the Raptors. Are they / aren't they "domesticated"? It still, to me, looks like they are running with the bike like Chris Pratt sidekicks. He's like the Cesar Milan of dinosaurs.

From what I can gather, he's been trying to train them to an extent but they're still very wild. Kind of like a pack leader role to them

I posted back on page 11 of this thread, the director's comment on the relationship. Basically, Chris Pratt is the trainer and like many dangerous animal trainers today (eg: lions, tigers etc) they accept him as the dominant individual/leader of the pack, but these animals are not domesticated (far from it) and one false move/unfamiliar face in their inclosure could lead to disaster, again like with big cat trainers.

Final trailer is up a few days before release...

So, just came back from watching this.

First, standard opinion of the film is that I enjoyed it. As the dust settles I think there might be some shuffling on which sequel is best but for many it will be this one. It has a really good stab at recreating the magic of the original with the soaring soundtrack and tracking shots of huge dinosaurs roaming the paddocks. It's also very true to the Jurassic Park mythology (as much as there is) and the general scoring of 4/5 seems about right for it. Enjoyable old school romp and one where it's nice to see the concerns the trailers raised are all explained or tackled head on in the film itself.

Now for the spoilered stuff which, purely IMO, touches on some of the stuff that I was less keen on but spoils moments quite a bit:

-In the film it's made clear that the events of Jurassic Park are known and almost considered a sore talking point but none the less the people on charge have managed to press ahead and, in the 10+ years since Jurassic Park 3, build a fully functional and working successor with Jurassic World. Not only that but it's proven safe and popular with it's biggest concern being on keeping that bottom line going up hence the I-Rex project. For such a premise, knowing this is a running franchise, they don't half make it hard for themselves. We're almost beaten over the head with repeated reminders of how one incident will shut the doors forever on the park. I'd have been more likely to expect their to be multiple parks around the world by this point giving them room for sequels but instead the film ends feeling like the options are limited to less than appealing ones. Odd given the park is pretty much intact and re-establishable at the end.

-As much as the premise lends itself to recapturing the magic air of the original, the film does tread a very fine line between reverence and remake at times. It's probably this that costs it the most points as some sequences stray very close to ones in the first film except for one that has an air of Lost World about it which is probably (tellingly) the weakest of all the action scenes. There's some points where you just can't shake the first film out your head. The smaller nods such as Mr DNA, Goldblum on a book etc land much better. There's one really nostalgia heavy scene but I felt it sadly under delivered.

-The I-Rex itself. I completely get the idea of it. Its purpose in the plot is the same as its purpose in the film, to wow audiences with something new as well as to remind us about messing with natures design. The I-Rex is a tough dinosaur with several key aspects to make it stand out, after the film though you realise how under utilised it is for a dino that is present throughout the whole film. We get a shopping list of stuff unique about it with momentary examples but in the end none of it matters as it's used much in the same was as the Spinosaurus in JP3.

There's some other bits but smaller footnotes really.

This all sounds very negative and the film is very entertaining, almost like a Jurassic Park V2.0 for younger audiences and to get the ball rolling on a fifth film etc (one that the set up is a bit fumbled for but clearly hoped for by the studio).

In time I think I'll probably class it in second place out the four, but not by as wide a margin as some of the reviews have pinned it at.

In the USA it's just taken $82.8 million in its first full day on release (3rd highest US opening day of all time), with a predicted opening weekend of $180 - 193 million, so a 5th movie is pretty much a sure thing at this stage, plus Chris Pratt is contracted for a sequel (according to the man, himself). After Furious 7, Universal must be VERY happy this summer!

Just saw this at the GSC Imax

yeah its worth a viewing that's for sure and agree with a lot of what SF says (big spoilers within)

it plods along trying to keep the secret of which genome was spliced with the rex to create the I-rex but it's pretty much evident who that is when you look at it, I thought the camouflage was superb definitely something which worked

also saw the nostalga bit but was underwhelming and seemed very reliant on sponsorship, one of the hall is Samsung, all the vehicles are mercs (except the original parks jeep) and Verizon get a nod as the sponsor of the I-rex

the final sequence I thought was good but when they introduced the rex it didn't make it anymore spectacular but the best dinosaur in it is the Mosasaurus but by all accounts its not even a dinosaur to the nerdists

I cant remember it even including any of the other parks in the equation, it seems like it was a direct sequel to the first because as SF says there is a stigma with what happened on the island 20 years previous but that's it and nothing else is mentioned about any of the other parks or islands

as for a sequel well they've left it open so if it makes enough money then I'm sure they can come up with the next batch of hybrids, I just hope it doesn't go down the route the movie was taking it (military usage)

Wow! It took $208.8 million this last weekend in the U.S., that's the highest opening weekend of all time in North America!!! Jurassic World may well end up being Universal's second global billion dollar grossing movie of the year, along with Furious 7...
