Well I guess I don't know why we'd only be comparing with movies with CG effects. Final Wars has some CG if that counts but really it's not about how the effects were made, it's about how good the movie is. Godzilla '98 wouldn't have been any more entertaining with improved CG and I also wouldn't in any way question how good the effects were in Pacific Rim. I just don't quite see how that's relevant on its own.

I wouldnt have enjoyed PR level of over the top action (massive fist going through an office block and setting off the paperweight) in this Godzilla. I'm glad they used the original 54 version as the springboard. Only problem was the threat level wasnt in keeping with the tone. You always knew Godzilla was gonna win because big G was big and stronger than the MUTOs. In PR this wasnt necessarily the case as the threats kept increasing in size, strength and numbers.
If they get bit right in the next G film then it'll be sick, right now its merely ok.

The nature of CGI only effects change the nature of fight scenes. The stature and biomechanics of the duels are altogether different to the more wrestling/grappling nature of men in suits. It's a huge shift in style and should be judged on some of it's own terms and merits.
Its splitting hairs really - as a whole PR is no benchmark, yet as all modern kaiju efforts seem to be wholly CGI, then that creates a niche of its own, with its unique creative potentials and pitfalls.Last edited by prinnysquad; 21-05-2014, 19:01.

Going see this tomorrow.
Pacific rim was great, the detail and work that went into the Jaegers and Kaiju is just amazing and Del Toro knows what he is talking about, sure it was a little flat in the middle but come on these movies are about giant monsters fighting and Pacific Rim did it in spectacular fashion.
No Godzilla film ( until now ) or Gamera can match Pacific Rim when it comes to giant things fighting each other, just because of the budget and the the effects.....

From the original 54 version going through all the Showa, Heisei and Millenium movies the only thing that links them all is Godzilla himself and even he isn't the same in every movie.

What I mean is that the action and pacing is nothing like Pacific Rim. It is much more comparable to other Godzilla movies. He's got about Final Wars levels of screen time for one thing and many setups and views of the creatures feel like they could have been plucked from numerous Godzilla movies. It's a Godzilla film. If you rate Pacific Rim higher than previous Godzilla movies for whatever reason, I'd be surprised if you find what you're looking for with this one.

Pacific Rim set the new bench mark when it comes to huge monsters fighting that's all, no one can deny that.
