I've been getting into ILikeTrains recently. They're a strange band, kind of 1980s New Wave vocals mixed with a more modern sound. And very sombre stuff too, I read one quote which said it was music to commit suicide to.

It's quite good though, quite different.

      iLiketrains are decent.

I've been digging my old Smiths records out. 'Hatful of Hollow' and 'The Queen is dead'.

Also been listening to the sombre instrumentals of The Dirty Three 'Cinder' and Calexico 'Toolbox'.

for any Mode fans out there lots to listen to at the moment, they have just released the final 2 discs in the remasters series which sound amazing, especially mid era mode from Construction Time Again thru Violator.

the new Dave Gahan album is also superb, his first solo effort was a bit poor for me but this new one is brilliant, think the spirit of Personal Jesus and Useless and you won't be far wrong. sounds more like a Mode record than the last 2 actual mode efforts.

Haven't heard his solo album but currently listening to Recoil's Subhuman and loving it. Alan Wilder has a real cinematic style in these albums and they're dark and dirty and just excellent.

know what you mean with the recoil stuff, sort of music for which the lazy review always uses the phrase 'widescreen landscape'.

i never really got into it, think he shaped Depeche's sound massively but needed the songs from Martin Gore to work with (his 2 solo albums are worth checking out as well).

if you like the Mode then definitely check out Dave Gahans second effort (torrent preview until next week !)

Cool, I'll check it out. I'm a big Depeche Mode fan. Haven't ever listened to Gore's solo stuff either. I'll see what I can track down.

enjoy, boths gore solo efforts are cover albums, first is called the counterfeit ep and from memory only has 6 tracks but its wonderful, second is cleverly called counterfeit 2, its not as good but has a brilliant version of an old nick cave song, loverman.

as i mentioned above the re-issued remasters are worth checking out as well for a fan, they each come with a 45min documentary about the making of each album and what was occuring for the band at the time. they are not nicey nicey puff pieces either and make you realise how strained things have been over the years between band members, who seem to actively dislike each other !

btw - use you on dave gahans latest is better than personal jesus - its an awesome huge dark rocker !

Must say i really do love The Hives, this is another fantastic album by them. All the songs are ultra catchy just like everything else The Hives have done.
