Netflix has been mentioned for Clarkson's next move. Would be an ideal platform for a worldwide car show.

Tony Hall, the BBC’s Director-General, has released the following statement.

“It is with great regret that I have told Jeremy Clarkson today that the BBC will not be renewing his contract. It is not a decision I have taken lightly. I have done so only after a very careful consideration of the facts and after personally meeting both Jeremy and Oisin Tymon.

“I am grateful to Ken MacQuarrie for the thorough way he has conducted an investigation of the incident on 4th March. Given the obvious and very genuine public interest in this I am publishing the findings of his report. I take no pleasure in doing so. I am only making them public so people can better understand the background. I know how popular the programme is and I also know that this decision will divide opinion. The main facts are not disputed by those involved.

“I want to make three points.

“First – The BBC is a broad church. Our strength in many ways lies in that diversity. We need distinctive and different voices but they cannot come at any price. Common to all at the BBC have to be standards of decency and respect. I cannot condone what has happened on this occasion. A member of staff – who is a completely innocent party – took himself to Accident and Emergency after a physical altercation accompanied by sustained and prolonged verbal abuse of an extreme nature. For me a line has been crossed. There cannot be one rule for one and one rule for another dictated by either rank, or public relations and commercial considerations.

“Second – This has obviously been difficult for everyone involved but in particular for Oisin. I want to make clear that no blame attaches to him for this incident. He has behaved with huge integrity throughout. As a senior producer at the BBC he will continue to have an important role within the organisation in the future.

“Third – Obviously none of us wanted to find ourselves in this position. This decision should in no way detract from the extraordinary contribution that Jeremy Clarkson has made to the BBC. I have always personally been a great fan of his work and Top Gear. Jeremy is a huge talent. He may be leaving the BBC but I am sure he will continue to entertain, challenge and amuse audiences for many years to come.

“The BBC must now look to renew Top Gear for 2016. This will be a big challenge and there is no point in pretending otherwise. I have asked Kim Shillinglaw to look at how best we might take this forward over the coming months. I have also asked her to look at how we put out the last programmes in the current series.”

Fook Top Gear and fook anyone who wants that racist old dinosaur reinstated. I used to be a massive fan of his but over the years he's shown his true colours and needs to be put down.

I've no doubt all 3 will shift to Rupert Murdock TV and everyone will make a fortune. Quite frankly they're made for each other.

I'm glad this was said. Although the mention of BBC being a church is weird...

It's going to be interesting to see who bids for him, it's an instant audience move but their PR and HR teams will be on constant red alert

when you realised he was the sort of person to hang about with David Cameron, and Alex James, at one of the worst excuses for a festival the UK has ever seen you have to ask yourself how anyone could think this idiot had any credibility or good judgement.

this clip form Stewart Lee is fantastic description of Top Gear

Kind of appropriate though that the BBC referring to themselves as a broad church, considering both have covered up kiddy fiddling in the past. The BBC pretends to have moral integrity but it's a total sham the only thing they are frightened of is losing the license fee.

I got bored of Top Gear ages ago when, like QC said, it all became directed farce. I like the car reviews though, but not worth sitting through all the situation comedy for a few laughs just to watch the reviews. Don't get me wrong, I did laugh occasionally, but just not enough to carry on.

It's good that punching = firing.

                        Wow, stay classy topgear fans

[edit] just your usual twitter scum posts about what they are going to do to the producer. Obviously a few choice expletives in the image so it's now been taken down. Sorry about that mods.

Just realised when i had a closer look i didn't read them all. Yeah best not have that up on display.

The report all those vile tweets came from if anyone wants to read up on it all.

Obviously the link is NSFW due to the swearing in some of the tweets at the bottom of the article. If it's still not ok the either let me know or snip it out.

It was the right decision not to renew his contract as it would have set a very poor example, I still don't think he's a racist though

I got bored with Top Gear years ago when it went from a semi factual car program to 3 tits pissing around at the license payer's expense, some post season 10 episodes were alright but this is when the show really started to go downhill and the scripted sequences were more apparent than ever.

They had a few opportunities to make some interesting shows out of the material they were given but as always it degenerated into crapfests like the one where they were going to take a car and modify it to see if it could compete with an Evo IX on the track but then went and bought a people carrier and duct taped a F1 wing onto it...

Even in the early series the lap times were faked to keep certain car manufacturers happy (cough cough Ferrari). I think it was the 360 CS and 911 GT3 that had the exact same track times...

What's next for the trio? You can bet they've already been approached by different production teams wanting to secure them first.

As for the show... Clarkson was the show and he is irreplaceable as the oaf lead presenter. As previously said you can't just find a petrolhead to fill his shoes and you'd have to have someone putting on a Clarkson persona, Harry Enfield in a pube wig would be my choice. He can't drive for **** and doesn't have a motoring journalism background but the show has moved on to being an entertainment program more than anything else so it wouldn't really matter now.

Ultimately I think the BBC will reformat the program into being something more like the original show where they reviewed more common cars that the public actually drive.

And its viewing figures will nosedive as they did when Clarkson left Top Gear last time. Unfortunately the BBC was in a no win situation on this one. Top Gear is effectively RIP and that is going to cost the BBC money.

Top tip: ask your colleagues if they think Clarkson should keep his job despite the punch.

If they say yes, hit them. Apparently it's OK.
