I 100% believe that most of those are dead but Disney just isn't saying so because their ability to make SW films is already publicly something of an embarrassment. That's 14 films - more than has been made in decades.
I feel like Mandalorian and Grogu could really go hard in either direction. Maybe there's still enough pull to the show to carry that one across the line but given how things have been shaking out on the Marvel side of the TV/Movie divide I wouldn't be shocked if it collapses like Solo either.
For a franchise that can't consistently get one non-mainline film out after another, any trilogy plans feel very premature too. If you had 11 films in the pipeline I don't knwo why you'd even entertain another trilogy adding to the stack. The series have increasingly performed middling also, the issues with brand appeal have only gone more stale in the wait so though I'm not personally normally of the same stance as the fanbase I'm finding myself falling into the same mindset of a full break being required.
Let the series in the pipeline air then give the shows a break. Wipe most of those projects out of the slate, I'd insta-axe:
-Kinsberg's Trilogy: Make a film, sure. But try to make one that stands on its own first, don't run before you've even taking a step because there's zero evidence yet anyone cares
-New Jedi Order: Honestly, I'd retool it into being Episode X. The idea of explicitly making mainline sequels in trilogies is stupid, just make a new core entry as and when demand and storyline makes it worthwhile. It's the lead of the last three, continuing their arc - just call it and promote it as Ep X and be done with to give it it's best PR push.
-Dawn of the Jedi: Kill it, much like five to six years ago when Disney tried to make a big announcement of doing projects set in the KOTOR style era - when it comes to general audiences no-one gives a **** because it's largely little more than a slight set dressing redesign. Much like they aren't gagging for prequel era additions either. I still maintain that one of the issues is that whilst the core fanbase are very awkward and quick to contest stuff, the studio hugely overthinks how complicated Star Wars story in the films actually is.
-Lando: Possibly the very last of these that should be being considered
-Filoni: Unless Mando performs stronger than I'm braced for, this should just be a Disney+ thing
-Taika: I don't even know why this was put on the slate given anyone who has a style of filmmaking of their own has been fired. This will never get made I bet and I reckon Ragnarok smothered it, Taika has hardly had a good run for a while now so this seems to be one for chopping.
-Rogue Squadron: Not the idea, I can see how it could work well. Take it off Jenkins though, it's clear it's dead and she doesn't own the concept so just get someone else to revamp the project.
-Johnson Trilogy: Honestly, I still feel over focusing on a trilogy is the main issue here.
If you trimmed that down you'd have Disney with a schedule/project slate of:
-The Mandalorian and Grogu
-Star Wars Episode X: The New Jedi Order
-Star Wars: Kinsberg Project
-Star Wars: Rogue Squadron
-Star Wars: Johnson Project
Perfectly enough and more focused

The first two episodes are mid, but I thought it improved as it progressed - I can see that people might be turned off by the first two as the setup is really slow and the show doesn't develop until they're off planet. Its production values are very high compared to other recent SW series, overall I'd rate it 7.5/10 - it's worth a watch for sure. I'd rather have another series of this than The Mandalorian.Last edited by MartyG; 15-01-2025, 17:31.
