Saw Napoleon the other night. In 4DX no less. It was pretty good. Mr Phoenix is great in the lead role breaking away from the stereotypes surrounding the man and making him seem oddly human. Surround sound nerds will be delighted with the effects work in this certainly some of the most effective I can recall.

Renfield is a twist on a Dracula movie with Nicholas Cage playing Dracula while Nicholas Holt plays his life long servant Renfield, the set up here is the main focus is on Holt who is talking through his problems with a Support group for people trapped in toxic relationships.
Brilliantly funny very slapstick and extremely violent it fly's along at a great pace. I'm not sure why its got so much hate from critics i think they kind of missed the point on this one. Its not a cinematic masterpiece no but Cage is Brilliant as Dracula and you really end up rooting for Holt's character. It left me wanting to see more of these two, i think being able to binge whole series of stuff in an eve has spoiled me for movies, as it felt like it was over before it had really gotten started.

Watched on Film4 last night Fanny Lye Deliver'd, a part BFI funded film, sometimes called just The Delivered presumably to cater to US sensibilities about the word "fanny".
A period drama set in post English Civil War rural Shropshire farm it owes a huge amount the 1968 film : Witchfinder General but replaces witch hunting with the pursuit of those with 'heretic' religious beliefs. It also has a distinct flavour of the film Blood On Satan's Claw which was set in the same sort of period but included supernatural horror elements that this film doesn't have.
Charles Dance and Maxine Peake star as a less than happily married couple, him an old soldier with inflexible Christian beliefs and her a woman who seems to accept her place in the world as just being his wife. There is a catalyst for change in their lives when a young couple being pursued by the law arrive at their farm.
Problem with this film for me is that the writing and plotting have an amateurish feel and there is a very uncomfortable mix of extreme violence, long philosophical discussion and sexual content that is quite explicit to begin with but seems to end abruptly, like some other scenes. It is as if it has either been badly edited or the actors decided they did not want to go there.
The epilogue has a tacked on feminist agenda message too that wasn't convincing either.
Niche interest.Last edited by fallenangle; 29-11-2023, 12:20. Reason: weird additional characters removed from end of post

Bought a projector for my birthday just for movies. Watched Gremlins on it last night. Still a classic but I did notice a lot of errors in the film. Also, the 5.1 sound mix is seriously lacking in the first half. That opening music should really bring you in but it's mostly stuck to the center channel. Things do really pick up in the sound department once the Gremlins take over the house.

It's a definite sign of the 1980's that someone at the studio watched the first film and when commissioning the sequel decided - "Yes. It needs more of this"
Which brings me neatly onto:
Short Circuit 2
I recall the first half being more entertaining than it is but I'd be a damned liar if I didn't admit the second half still lands its punches. My eldest barely wanted to look at the screen during the scene where Johhny 5 is assaulted and his battery fluid splatters one guy like blood, immediately sensing where the film was going. My eldest daughter was heartbroken by the finale too and it was a reminded of how much modern kids films are wary of pulling this kind of stuff off. But it's nice they were invested and it's probably the safest, most harmless way for them to learn empathy and life lessons. As much as it's a simple series it's a testament to the character that they have built enough sense of character by the end of the second film to pay those scenes off because it doesn't work as well at the end of the first film. There would actually be a fair bit of a mileage to get out of a modern day third film.
The Blues Brothers
I feel like I'm back into throwing a grenade with this one. I've never sat through it before end to end and after this weekend - I can see why. I absolutely love how extensive the cast is, it was fun seeing the chain of recognisable faces popping up. But the film is ****. It's 2hr 30mish run time is full to the brim with bloat and to be honest, it didn't raise a single smirk from opening shot to closing credit. Hot Take as well - If Belushi had lived, I don't think he'd have stayed a big name like his co-stars and GB would have been much worse with him in it.

In the absence of the FA Cup match on BBC1 I went through the EPG and glad I did because Film4 were showing Studio Ghibli's 2016 The Red Turtle.
Never heard of let alone seen it but I'm glad I have now.
Lovely animation style, a charming 'fairytale' but much more than just that about a shipwrecked sailor; wonderfully poignant, melancholic at times but far from depressing. It reminded me of the French short film "The Man Who Planted Trees" in its emotional impact.
Watch it with your younger kids/grandchildren, if they have the patience, and they'll likely be drained and sobbing by the end.

Went to see Godzilla Minus One last night. It was very entertaining but also very predictable. To me it felt like it tried to be a hollywood blockbuster. Godzilla looked great and menacing, and the first time Godzilla theme started playing it gave me the chills. I liked it, I don't normally go to the cinema because I really don't enjoy movie theaters, but I'm glad that I went to see Godzilla Minus One.
