Clannad ep 18: Well it seems the prediction of Tobal's with

Nagisa being the final choice being pretty much set. I thought the last scene with the tennis match was truly impressive the way Tomoyo, first then Kyou and Ryou all finally twig that Tomoya has a thing for Nagisa even if he doesn't know it himself. Although the crying was bit...extreme in it's animation style.

I still have some thoughts on the things that might happen next but I'll keep them secret till the end in case they prove right.

Ahem... I'd like to think most of us had the same thoughts as to who it'd be and not just Tobal. I want some praising for my super prediction skills too Especially as it's the relationship that's had the most development throughout the series and was pretty much telegraphed early on in the show.

Anyway, this episode among a few others gives me the feeling that the show would have been "better" with more episodes. Some of it did feel rushed, especially Tomoyo's story, which I quite liked but they could've done with more time to develop it, I think. I also thought the reaction towards the end of the tennis match was a little odd, I mean I can see why they might but still it was odd. I suppose part of it was the way it was animated which I have to say is probably one of the things I'm not really a fan of... when they do the crying scenes... extreme as you said, Mr. Jeff.

Fairly pleased overall though with where it's been going. I suppose there's at least another plot twist or two to come given the number of episodes they've got left. So far it's still on course to be my favourite of the key adaptations I've seen. Need to watch Air sometime soon I guess...

Nice episode again if a bit rushed in places. Probably not one for the Kyou/Ryou/Tomoyo fans though.

Sorry sorry, I know everyone else had similar predictions Zapp. I just remember Tobal being most vocal about that particular...win shall we say. I'm left feeling a bit disappointed at how much they've had to condense especially with the culling of some of the minor characters like the landlady and Sunohara's sister.

        As for the odd part;

It's not that I have a problem with the way kyoani do those kind of crying animation per se since they pulled them off astonishingly well for Kanon. I just didn't particularly like the way it worked out in that last scene. The facial expressions just seemed a bit off. Also, it doesn't really explain to the viewer why Kyou is crying for what should be her sister's loss or at least not to that extreme.

Ugh, can't explain it well really.

Mmm, I wish I could see how Key did it properly.

That's sort of what I meant with the animation for that scene. The way they did the expressions. Perhaps I'm being a bit too harsh when I say it's the way they do those scenes, because I can't really remember having too many complaints from Kanon's. Then again I can't really remember them at all either.

I think it was as much about the publicness of the place they were in as well. I expected them to be crestfallen and hurt but not to the extent that they would be crying so much in public. I thought that'd be something they'd do when they're on their own and the realization really hits home.

Also I'm not really sure what else they could have done to explain to the viewer why Kyou reacts(even though I thought it was extreme myself) bar having a Kyou monologue . I think as much as anything they've just left the viewers to piece it all together from the things that happened in the previous episodes

Clannad ep18 - well that happened way to quickly for my liking as i was hoping we'll get a few more eps for Kyou and Tomoyo before Nagisa returned to steal the spot light back...

and the Tomoyo backstory just felt tacked on(as zap felt it was rushed to) because of how little there was and the story was pretty stupid(broken family, get back together over a sucide attempt, it takes more than that). Still the crying at the end was a bit over done, but you can see it welling up inside of them when it fully tigged between 4 other girls which side Tomoya heart was with. Kyou was for me clearly crying for herself rather than a sister, just wish they'd done it somewhere private so they didn't look like fruit loops.

Guess the reason for ending it so quickly is to get to the After story, still would have liked a Kyou or Tomoyo win over Nagisa but she's not a bad 3rd best at all

Gunm00 ep18 - wow im getting seriously impressed with the show now to point i have to watch it as soon as i've downloaded it.

Even though there clearly using the Thrones as cheap heat(from there actions) it was enough to make Setsuna into the likable character for his actions and the stuff with Louise was pretty nasty with her losing an arm... and saji bring her rings as presant , so lets just hope that payoff is good. Also Graham rocks hardcore, i was laughing which he owned Throne1 in such a cool way.

clannad 18, was pretty much business as usual bar the rather over the top end scene, but i wont go into detail, you guys have already discussed it to death

                Gundam 00 18, was a great ep:

They pretty much acknowledged that the throne team arnt part of CB, and they were being as big a pricks as usual, the whole business with Louise was harsh, lost her hand, her whole family and i think she was crippled too

the graham fight was brilliant, was great how he owned the throne with its own beam saber, i wouldn't be surprised if he got his own flag gundam somewhere along the line, maybe a pass me down like mwu with the strike, or atleast some sort of upgrade once this greater war kicks off that they seem to be leading up too

cant wait for the next ep for hot Exia vs throne action, here's hoping for the first real epic battle of the series, also something seems to be going on with lockon

Ah, Graham. You rock my world! That was ace Made even better by the fact that he is Tomoya. Possibly my two favourite male characters in currently running shows...

If only he'd gotten the whole thing. They now have some bits and bobs from the Throne to research and learn more about the technology.

Louise... what can I say, that was brutal. Even I felt for her and she's not exactly been my favourite character (I haven't really liked most of her segments as she seemed like a bit of brat). Just makes me want the Thrones to die even more, especially Nena. Preferably get Allelujah to turn torturer on her ass again. It's the least she deserves.

Any notice that other guy in the preview with a bit of a sly smile on his face. I can't remember his name, Ribbons? The green haired guy who's usually seen talking to that ponytailed Surveryor. I wonder what the deal with him is.

Surely Exia is going to get battered. Unless this goes a bit super robot on us and Setsuna uses GAR to lay the smackdown on them. Looking forward to it nonetheless.

I, too, am hoping for some epic gundam on gundam battles soon. A nice throne death before this season is over wouldn't go amiss either. Preferably Nena's.

Mnemosyne episode 1: Urban fantasy-ish show about some kind of private investigator girl whose claim to fame is that she can't die. Seems like they'll be (and already are) using it as an excuse to shred her apart in all manners of graphic violence during the course of the show -- it's definitely not for the faint of heart.

I'm getting a Speed Grapher kind of vibe from this (what with the "journey into the darkest parts of the decadent human mind"-themed antagonist). It's piqued my interest so far, but I find the overabundance of gratuitous boob shots grating -- if I want porn, I know where to find it, dammit!

6 months after disregarding it despite raving reviews by everyone here, I keep cursing myself for not having watched Gurren-Lagann along with you guys. Just been through episode 17 -- the presence of a recap episode sucked (it does in *any* show, mind), but events once more took an unexpected turn with the

                      7-year timeskip

                      .

Who would have thought -- I'm watching a super robot show (heck, you can hardly get more super than "GIGA DRILL BREAKER!!!" (complete with special effects in the subtitles )) and enjoying every minute of it. That everything about it screams "high budget" probably helps. The artwork and animation quality is simply mind-blowing, and there are plenty of non-conventional (yet cool-looking) art styles and techniques in use (mid-episode inserts, explosions, those black & white sequences when a character dies, the entire Helix King character...). Also impressive is that the opening sequence changes every 3 episodes or so. And the soundtrack is ace. Only (smalll) problem so far: I'm having trouble taking Viral seriously, because he has the voice of Madarame, and that's especially noticeable when he gets pumped up.

I *have* to get myself a Gurren-dan hoodie.

It only gets better and better till the Super Robot fights surprass the crazy GAR'ness(here we go 4chan meme ) found in GunBuster2.

youd prolly have an even bigger problem with him as guy in GaoGaiGar(which is apparently his favourite role he's done) then, all he does is scream things in a very over the top fashion, and overcomes everything with raw courage, GGG is also quite high on the 4chan gar scale it is in he title after all, few clips for those of not familiar with GGG (warning a few spoilers from, GGG Final in em):

recommend it to anyone who has a passing interest in Super Robot series, its one of the best around once you get past the first set of eps, and GGG Final is just brilliant

I was just going to mention that. Around the time I was watching Gurren Lagann a few people I know were creaming themselves (not quite literally ) because of his role in Gaogaigar. I guess a lot depends on which roles you hear people do first.

I haven't seen GGG myself, it's still on the long list of stuff to watch though. I think I'm just going to wait for the DVD rips first though, as that should give me time to watch other stuff. Perhaps in the summer I'll get to it (although I seem to say that about loads of shows every year ).

I think I'm also going to watch Kino no Tabi in the next few weeks. I've had it on my hard drive for a while and pretty much everyone I've talked to about it does seem to rave about it, including you guys only just recently(which has gotten me interested again). Can't be bad can it?

Which brings me neatly on to my main point in this long rambling post. I was reading through the animesuki forums recently and came across a thread about an upcoming anime set to start in the spring season, called Allison to Lilia. The reason it caught my interest was because it was around the same time Jeff was talking about how much he loved Kino after watching it. This series is being adapted from a series of light novels written by the guy behind the Kino novels. The more I read the thread the more interesting it sounded. The only downside is that the revealed character designs haven't exactly rocked my world. As other people were saying in the asuki thread they're a bit generic. Really does sound like it could be a winner. Having said that it seems to be a different kettle of fish to what I had heard Kino was like. Just thought it'd be of interest to some of you.

                            Comment

Hah! I'd been eyeing up Allison to Lillia earlier on in the year and it wasn't until last week that I'd actually found out it was by the Kino's Journey writer. I also read the comments about the generic charcater looking designs and while they're certainly not unique in any special way, I think it'll be once again down to the storyline and interactions between the characters that'll make it decent. From what I've heard of the 2 series that are being combined for this series, it sounds like a really interesting show to watch. I'm dying for the Spring season already (even for just the confirmed line-up!) so this just makes me more hyped up.

Good luck with Kino though. You definitely won't regret it. It's just one of those shows that pulls you into it's pace completely.

                              Comment

Oh definitely. I should say that with my comment about the character designs I was trying to be a bit more critical about things rather than just try to hype it up. There's other stuff I put far more stock in than character designs, although interesting and unique ones are always a bonus, and you mentioned some of the important stuff already. But yeah another show to add to the tentative to watch list. It always seems to be the spring season that gets packed with the good stuff with one or two notable exceptions. Let's hope it's not a letdown.
