Well I started well with my new resolve sticking to what I said I'd do (and it was alright actually - most pleased that the running went well). But now I've been struck down by the cold / flu virus thats tearing its way through our office.

    Bloody hell...

[quote=Chain;1020785]Charles mate, no idea - sounds very serious, best getting proper advice I'd be wary of forum advice. No offense intended to anyone on here of course./quote]

Good advice indeed Chain. Most people know the difference between good pain and bad pain and that sounds like bad pain ie not to be totally ignored!

Interesting though that it sounds so much like stitch, to my knowledge noone knows what actually causes stitch although I read that one thought was that it was caused when the diagphram pulls the stomach lining or whatever its attached to (again sounds similar to what you say happens). Hence one of the suggestions being breath out heavily when your foot lands on the side which you have the stitch. Fortunately I dont get it very often and usually doing the above eases it within 2-3 minutes but its not pleasent so you have every sympathy!

Did speed session at the track last night 15X400 reps at 90 seconds. Felt good although my shins hurt after. Also there were some bods there doing reps in sub 70 seconds which kind of puts you off a little!

Interesting about the breathing - I find that if I switch the breathing over it can make it better or worse - I'll experiment. Also holding my arms above my head and stretching out my stomach helps too (if I slow down a bit). I've done a lot of messing about like this . Yes it does sound like a stich, but I get stitches as well and the stitches go away, whereas these quite literally stop me breathing after a while. Perhaps they are just REALLY bad stitches, but I prefer to call them a REAL BASTARD.

Oh, here's a good one for you lifters:

When you are reaching your last couple, shout (either in your head or out loud) words like "power" and "easy". Amazing how much difference it makes, so instead of thinking "omg I can't do any more this is really hard my bones are going to snap in half", you are thinking about completing the move with ease

Let me know if it works for you.

            it does

Also humming the rocky tunes works a treat (or playing the films in your head, heh!)

I started running again yesterday (i have been running, but yeserday was the start of a regular running routine) - i have been doing the odd thing recently but needed to seriously get back into my training. I was lifting 120k on the bench press last year (with two guys standing aside just incase i almost killed myself!) , i shudder at the thought of that now. Hopefully though it shouldn't take me too long to get back into it properly. Can't wait to get back to the gym though, really miss it

I would go through stages of doing some serious weight lifting, and then little running, or far too much running which meant i wasn't putting on the weight with my lifting! heh. This year i'll find a balance

At the moment its only a little weight lifting at home. Though I do my press ups each day. heh. Proper ones i mean. What i'm aiming for is three sets of a 100 within 10 minutes. I can do the first set of 100, take a few moments to catch my breath, then try the second set but i can only reach 70... then i wait a moment again... then the final set i can barely do 50. Absolutely kills afterwards but feels good.

Three sets of 100 is my goal though!

I was trying to think of some achievable goals I could set myself for this time next month:

              1st March
              - Jog for half an hour (at the moment I'm ****ed after 10 minutes)
              - Manage 10 press ups (I have never been able to do press ups)
              - Have lost at least half a stone.

The press ups thing has always been strange because my upper body strength is pretty good, but I guess me actual body is that heavy I struggle to get it off the floor >_< When I see people doing those 'clapping' press ups I'm in total amazement!

Shall check back in a month and see what I've managed

Ah, your get it man. Remember to position your hands in different directions too when doing press ups. There are three muscles to the tricep and its a bugger trying to work on all of them, but face your hands together when doing a press up is a nice start.

I've also been doing the press ups where you form a triangle shape with your hands. Bloody hard but works a treat. Also the good old-fashioned one-arm press ups make the blood floor

I'm incredibly vocal in the gym. I have to get psyched to improve my intensity. It usually starts with chalking the hands, then I prowl around the weights a bit. If benching, I sit down, slap my thighs a little and make a few noises. Get under the bar, slam my back in to bench a few times, a few screams, then I go for it.

During the exercise itself it's far worse, lots of screaming, and I've recently taken to calling myself names - "Come on you fat lazy ****!", stuff like that. A few people laugh, a few people aren't sure what to make of it, but it's my gym so I can do what I like

i've been crap, last week, only managed two runs around 2.8 miles each.

I'm going for a run tonight and see if i can hit the mythical 3 miles. I cant do press ups as I f@cked my collerbone and so its now like this /\ so it cant support much weight without hurting

                    any suggestions?

Come on dude you can p!ss that 3 mile goal. Why not set another goal just little bit further? 3.1 miles is 5k which is what most local races will start at, maybe pick a nice local race to aim for in the summer. As for press ups I suck at them! Reckon me an spagmaster would have a tough who's cr@piest at pressups competition! Ive just got rubbish upperbody strenght. Not too worried though. Next major goal for me now being to lose some weight, need to get down to between 11 2lb and 11 8lb gonna start by trying a eat less but more often plus morning run regime and quit booze, failing that i'm gonna try a fast for a day regime read some scientific athletic stuff reckons you can drop up to 10lbs probably not smartest idea ever but may be worth a try!

I'm doing it in .2 intervals per week I should be able to fit in three runs i'd think
