      andrewfee,

Yes, wouldn't it be great if companies stopped playing the megapixel game. Alas, the marketing men force it upon the tech guys no doubt. Of course that's not to say that genuine increases are unnecessary, as otherwise would still be be using crusty old 2 mp cameras.

Oh there are reasons for increases in resolution, you won't hear me arguing against that, but I'd be surprised if there are many images from point and shoots that are printed larger than A4, and 6mp is enough to print A4 at around 300dpi (I believe) and for most people, A3 at 150dpi would probably look great if they did want larger.

The usable resolution out of these 10MP compacts is far lower than you'll get out of something like the 6MP Fuji F30 though due to the amount of noise/noise reduction going on. It's just a shame to see Fuji improve the optics on the F40fd, and have it in a nice slim body (even if that does mean worse battery life) but there's no way I'm going to buy it if the images look worse than they do from the F30. I had been hoping to upgrade to it.

It's probably still a lot better than other cameras at that kind of resolution, but it seems 6MP was the "sweet spot" between noise and detail if Fuji can't have 8MP looking at least as good as the F30 did.

Found a superb camera shop in the middle of nowhere just out of Inverness (of all places), decided to head out and pick up a 30mm F1.4 I've had my eye on for a while. Rather annoyed to find that despite the fact they list it on their website that means they can order it in Bought some film instead for the good old Pentax K1000. They did have the Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro which would be interesting to try but a bit long for me.

Pictures have been leaked of two of the new Olympus cameras, the E-410 and E-510 - the latter is looking a lot smaller and neater than expected although not weather sealed. Eagerly awaiting full details on Monday although the elusive third body is still hush hush.

I am also thinking about the Sigma (?) 30 1.4, though I vowed never to buy a digital only lens. It's that or the EF 28 1.8.

            Pros: Faster and cheaper

Cons: I have read too many reports about QC issues with Sigma.

The Canon is the safe option as I know that it will work now, and in the future and can be used on FF bodies as well.

My current prime is a 50m f2 which is a great lens but as it's a macro the focus is slow. The Sigma is obviously shorter and faster plus it's pretty cheap for what you get.

No doubt it's a great lens but something in my head just says no. Maybe I am just a sucker for Canon's own...

Anyway, I am planning on getting the 70-200 F4 IS, as discussed, and adding the 28 1.8 to my prime collection. So if I pull it off, (don't think of the money) I will have a pretty well rounded lens line up with my zooms for outdoors/walkabouts and my primes for low light.

                17-40 F4
                70-200 F4 IS

                28 F1.8
                50 F1.8
                85 F1.8

I just need to replace the 50 1.8 with the 1.4, but that can wait for now.

The main two lenses I'm after at the moment are the ZD 11-22mm and 8mm FE but unlike Sigma Olympus Europe rip off European customers. So I really need to order from the US but if I get stung for customs it's going to be a lot of money.

I'm not that bothered about primes so I have just the one, just need the couple above and perhaps the Sigma 135-400mm and that will be me done for lenses.

My problem with Sigma is they may work now, but aren't guaranteed to work on future bodies, due to Canon not licensing the camera mount to anyone else (not too sure if this is the same for other vendors). My old 28-80 refuses to work on my 5D.

Nice set of lenses btw RJ, i've got a thing for primes atm!

                    Anyway, visited Elan Valley today

It's not a problem with Four Thirds, it's here to stay for a while.

                            Really superb pics, GT.

I haven't actually bought the 70-200 or the 28 yet, but will pick them up next week as I get paid.

You are right about Sigma, as Canon can render them obsolete at any time by just tweaking the EF mount on a new body.

I'm sure that Canon don't purposely change things on their mounts to stop non-canon lenses from working, it doesn't make sense to piss your customer base off that much, especially given the cost of some of the sigma lenses.

Also, it's not just other vendor lenses that stop working when changes are made, I have a Nikon 50mm lens that'll only work in total manual mode due to changes ( it is old mind ). So I don't think it's such a massive deal really.

                                Very nice shots btw
