Well if anyones interested ive just ordered a Sony A350. Seems to have had decent reviews across the web, and at this point i probably wouldn't notice the small differences between the Nikons and Canons of a similar pricepoint.

Nice one - I use a Nikon myself, but I hear good things about the Alphas and they do generally get good reviews - you'll have a good range of lenses to pick from as well, and that's when the fun starts..

The A350 has a good spec for the price as well - enjoy it...

It comes with 18-70 lens as standard, i could have gone for a bundle , but as this is my first foray into all this, i wanted to know more and what i would need before spending the money. I do like the look of those macro lenses though

Let us know how you get on with the A350 as I may be in the market for one soon. My good lady's KonicaMinolta 5D is apparently showing the black frame issue again so I may be looking for a replacement soon.

Good choice bwi, as Sony took over Minolta you've got some lovely Sony badged lenses to choose from plus I believe it will take Minolta ones too - cracking lenses, got a really soft spot for Minolta.

Ok, I need to be as good as this dude! Just look at his stuff - he's pretty damn good - I like this one particularly. His name's Carsten Windhorst - what a great name!

He had an article in Photo Pro (August 2008 issue) called how to be a rock photographer so I'm ordering a back issue of that...unless anyone has a copy of that issue that they've finished with?
