It gets more economical like this: 5D Mk I ? full frame but older tech ? 7D, which is a halfway house sensor between full and smaller frame ? and then I think it's the 50D.

If you get a full frame camera bare in mind that you'll also need the more expensive, full frame compatible lenses to make the most of the camera. Otherwise you'll have to crop all the pictures down.
Forgot to follow this up! She went with the 7D in the end and it really is a nice step up from the Nikon she had before. The videos are pretty damn impressive too so can't wait to have a play with it one day if she lets me lol.

Maybe you should try entering the first round of APOY 2012 SH4R4KU ? (Closing is 24th Feb, so be quick).

Yup, APOY 2012 has started up, I'm going to have another go at entering this year - didn't place at all last year, but then the top 30 is always superb.

This is mine for round 1 - the theme is Water in the Landscape, so give it go, great prizes to be won.

Been away from this thread and photography in general for too long, but good to see there are still great shots being posted here..

Marty - I'm going to try and enter more rounds in APOY this year - managed to place 11th in the B&W round last year. I like your entry for the first round - I struggled a bit as most of my water stuff doesn't have any land in it !

Entered this in the end, but not convinced it really fits the brief :

Am hoping that trying the different themes for each round might help get me out of the photographic rut I am in..

It's a landscape and it has water. Looks like it fits the brief to me

Don't think any of the themes are too out there this year.

So for round 3 of the Amateur Photographer comp I've put an early entry in:

                    Any Instagram users here?

Now it's out on Android I've started using it - feel free to add me (I'm on there as j_davies)

Yup, downloaded that yesterday - I'll add you in Jamie.

Despite having a DSLR and compact to hand most of the time, I do seem to take more shots with the phone, despite the inferior quality.

Decided to take a proactive step and get back out shooting, so I joined a few brave souls for a 4am Project photowalk around Birmingham city centre this morning. It was bloody freezing and I'm so glad I decided to take my tripod with me; there was no way in hell I would have ended up with anything useful with long shutter speeds.

The above shot was partly accidental. I'd set the shot up for a long exposure of 30 seconds or so on one of Brum's normally busy city centre streets, open to traffic. It had probably got about halfway through the exposure when a private hire car came tearing through and I had to quickly move the setup out of the way, forgetting that it was still exposing whilst moving it around and ended up with the above.

The rest of the set can be found on Flickr here.

So, thread revival time: Got myself a new toy ...

Must say I'm pretty impressed with the quality it produces - I wanted something that was going to give me decent IQ when I didn't want to lug the DSLR with me. Considered a CSC, but I think the G11 was a good choice, and it might even give me a bounce with the photography; I've mostly just been using the camera phone on Instagram and Molome the last month or so.

Did anyone enter any of the APOY stuff so far?

Been going back through the pages and am really liking the photos guys.
Marty - What did you use for the boat house pic? And how did you get on with the competition in the end?

                              Comment

The Boat House pic was from the Nikon D80, and it got nowhere in the comp. But then I expected that - the level of talent in the APOY is, frankly, stunning.
