Weekend of motorsports complete...I'm missing it already

This year I rented the absolute beast that is the Sigma 120-300 2.8. It's big, it's heavy, it's fast... it rocks. But I still prefer the Canon 70-200 2.8L with extender. It's a funny lens, the quality is pretty excellent (though not quite Canon L in my opinion) but it's so damn big that it makes it awkward to use. It dwarfs the 70-200 2.8 in length, and the width is just staggering - 105mm filter size anyone? The biggest downer is that for all this size, it can 'only' do 300mm, which isn't really super-telephoto in my opinion. For this weekend it ended up being ample mind, largely thanks to the great seats we had. Meant I had to take a super-sized camera bag which was slightly unfortunate!

Good job Pete, not always easy getting that type of shot well framed and sharp.

I rented a 70-200L f4 IS last year, I concluded that the IQ wasn't ?1000 superior to the kit I'm already using. Nice lens mind.

Another one from more recent hols:

          Hi people,

I entered my book into the Photography Book Now competition and it has been selected for the PBN 2011 People's Choice Award. The book is called 'Not Recommended for Use in Hot Beverages' by Patrick Graham and appears in a random place on this page:

Blurb is your one-stop shop for self-publishing professional books, magazines and more with user-friendly tools, global distribution and premium book printing services.

          It looks like this:

Please take a look and if you like it please vote for it! I am a young photographer and winning a prize like this could do wonders for my prospects. Feel free to share on social networks and with like-minded friends.

          Thanks all!

          P.

Captured from a video so apologies for the quality - the lightning bolt was only there for one frame!

What's the weather over there? Did a quick search but couldn't find any news. Is it just a standard storm? That orange makes it look like a dust storm.

It was a supercell (i think) and like the third in two weeks. The orange is where it caught the light from the setting sun in the opposite direction.

Very dramatic - looks like everything's about to be totally swallowed up, never to be seen again.

Not that I'm expecting to see a Supercell any time soon, but it's a good example of why having a camera on you at all times is a good thing. It's the reason I'm thinking of going down the micro 4/3 with a Lumix GH2.

Cheers - makes a change from the usual reaction of `Wargh! OMG!` from people it creeps out

That was actually the trailing edge of the storm, the leading edge snuck up too fast. Original image.
These were taken with my new (ex-display) 14Mp Canon Powershot A2200 HD which cost me an entire $70. Then $20 for a 16GB SDHC card so I could record more than 2 minutes of 720p video. Oddly it does limit it to only 9m59s per video but that does end up being ~2.2GB.

Lol spiders aren't that bad really. A lot of bad press I had to save a frog from the cat today (again) and that is wayyy more freaky to touch! Slippery devil was all over the place then when I finally caught him he wouldn't leave my hand.

Oh my girlyfriend got an A* yesterday in her photography A-levels Super proud of her. Will try and get one of her photos up if I can.
