The SLR ones aren't cheap, £30 odd - this cost me £16 inc postage, I got it to see if I could mount it on my motorcycle. It's quite surprising that DIY stores don't sell the correct thread for tripod mounts, they're 1/4" BSW and no one seems to sell them - I reckon you could make a killing on this, so it's quite odd the thread isn't readibly available.

Tried it on the bike yet? Would love to see some shots so get to it.

Down here we have a nut and bolt shop that sell just (guess what) nuts and bolts. They seem to be able to get anything to fit. Maybe you have something similar and could find some correct bolts there?

Not yet, I get my new tyre tomorrow, so I'll give it a go then - I'll see how truly grippy the gorillapod is then.

This might sound a silly question but I've never worked it out from the piccies of it - how does it actually grip? Is it stiff to bend?

It's not a daft question at all.

Each little pod twists, and each pod is rubbery, it grips by the constricting motion.

Looks a handy grip, think the SLR ones only work with lighter SLRs though. So no 1D with a 400mm lens!

So it constricts? Cool. I never would have guessed that from the piccies.

At 30 quid I might invest in one. I can feel a big splurge coming on for the spring. So far on my list is a good quality tripod, a wide angle lens, and a flash.

mmmm, potential good weather brings out the wallet!

Me, i'd like a new flash (one with a bit more control) and maybe a monopod for my 300mm

Anyone here ordered camera parts from the US? I'm trying to get a hold of a Sigma 135-400mm which is currently non-existant in the UK as far as I can tell. BH Photo/Video seem to be recommended, they offer UPS, Fed Ex and USPS - is there any of these three which would be more likely to slip through customs?

                    Thanks,
                    John

Non of them i'd expect. Though USPS would use Royal Mail this end, and RM can be useless and forget to collect the customs fee.

If your willing to import have you tried the HK dealers?

I note AJ Purdy list one for Canon/Nikon
and Mifsuds list one for Canon/Nikon/Minolta/Pentax

It's a four thirds mount I need - some dealers list them as available but on placing an order they admit they don't have them.

I have looked at HK dealers but not so keen on them simply because I'm not sure who I'm dealing with - BH in particular seem to have a good reputation amongst US and UK buyers.

I know you aren't kean on HK, but I've had no problem with onestop-digital.com.

This morning on the way to work - fantastic lighting, sun looked massive, low fog...no camera :/

I've used them too and they were excellent. To the point that one of the items I ordered was on a delayed order and they immediately asked me if I wanted a refund and were quite honest saying they didn't know when they'd get it.

I said I'd wait. And a month later I had an email saying they still hadn't got any but now expected to get some within a month.

Two weeks later I had an email telling me that it was on its way. And they didn't charge me extra postage for it being a seperate delivery despite being fed-ex'd.

I was very impressed with there service.

I think you'll have to accept the duty/vat hit and use B&H To be honest you'll probably save a bit on the UK price.

Think it was Ish that suggested heading out into the great outdoors with a macro lens as the suns out, tried that today, don't like macros!! Also my lens is pants.

Ended up with this non macro though:
