I'm having a total photography lull at the moment. Barely ever on flickr any more and haven't taken a shot in about 3 weeks

Mostly down to not having much time at the moment due to doing bike test, selling old bike and buying a new bike. Once that's out of the way I should get back into it. Still planning on getting the 70-200 f4 L around the beginning of May so that should spur me on a bit.

Took this rather abstract shot the other night.

Likewise, I haven't gone near my camera for ages

It's depressing because I really want to get back into it...but I can't find any kind of inspiration.

Your wallet might not want to hear this but you should seriously consider picking up the IS version. I don't know if you have used it (IS) before but it's one of those things that will leave you slack jawed at times.

What lenses do you have anyway?

Lens buying is a disease so it seems, thus I am not sure what additions to make. I am now in love with the longer end and I want to get even closer, therefore a x 1.4 is next on the list.

              cavalcade,

You should also consider upgrading to a pro account as, once you start taking a lot of pics, Flickr's bandwidth limits will, err, limit your options as such.

My wallet doesn't want to hear that so shush!! I don't need IS, it's pretty useless for motorsport and I can manage without it for other shots (that's what I'm telling myself anyway!). Can only realistically afford 2nd hand anyway so the IS version wont really be around and would be too much anyway.

I have a few lenses, none of which are worth shouting about, the zoomer is a Tamron 70-300. It will be ebayed when the right 70-200 L comes up.

I was asking about wide angle lenses earlier. Anyone used one of these:

Alastair + PeteJ - I went through a similar lull through January and February. I think its the dark of the winter months. I recommend taking a walk with your macro lens at the moment - at least where I live spring is just starting and there is blossom and all sorts of fresh growth. It'll soon get your photographic juices flowing again.

My Mum has given me a task. She wants to buy Dad a small compact digital camera which has an "idiot mode" so she can use it. Budget of £200.00 max. Any suggestions?

Took a couple of shots today just around the garden. Nice to see the insects out 'n about again

Nice shots, I'll have to cut the grass/clear the dog turds before I venture into the back garden for macro!

Anyway from the safety of my room a late night macro

Played around a little with reflective flash (reflections from old Play-Asia $5 off coupons!), bottom half I'm pleased with. The top is blown out a bit.

                          Nice macro shots.

I find close in work very, very tricky, especially outside. A breath of wind, a wobble of the hand and it's all over. I especially liked the one of the two white and yellow flowers (3rd of the set).

The new Canon Ixus 70 cameras look very nice - but for £200, you've got loads of choice. Stick with the big brand names and you'll not get a duff one.

Another Ixus 70 link. Looks a bit fiddly on the back ( due to the size ), but it's all auto everything.

The Powershot A550 is bigger and has a dial for mode which would make selecting "idiot mode" easier I guess. Tis also a nice camera and really well priced.

That's why you need a tripod

Thanks Marty. I think I'll suggest the Canon Ixus 70 to Mum. Found this quote in a review:

It is simple enough to be used by a child (we tried) and yet sophisticated enough for serious photography.
which sounds like just what my folks need (the first bit, anyway).
