If I were you I'd stick with the kit lens to begin with, although at first I thought they were pretty crappy I have since been proven wrong (in this very thread!) and they are usually pretty useful.

You could easily buy lots of lenses and get use of them, but personally speaking I think the one would be enough to begin with.

Photography is expensive. With lenses you get what you pay for basically so if you go cheap expect variable aperture zooms with reasonable build quality. More money buys you 'faster' fixed aperture zooms with excellent/pro build quality and top class optics. Crazy money buys you 'fast'......well we won't go there yet.

Aperture is the key to lens prices, particularly with zooms. I posted this pic a while back as it gives you an idea (assuming that you don't know) of what the numbers mean.

This is my collection of lenses which I think is pretty well rounded. I have the primes for low light and creative stuff and the fixed aperture zooms for general day to day shooting.

Canon EF 17-40 mm f/4L USM
Canon EF 70-200 mm f/4L IS USM
Canon EF 50 mm f/1.8 II
Canon EF 85 mm f/1.8 USM

Of course I am not suggesting that you buy that lot, and you won't be able to if you go Nikon but lens lust is a disease that we all fight in our own way. A stated, an 18-55 and a 50mm prime would be a good start.

GT, I read and enjoyed your blog post about the 300mm. It's a lot bigger than I expected. The 2.8 must be one big mutha...

babs - I don't think you'll go far wrong if you buy a Canon or Nikon in the price range your talking about. That being the case I think the most important thing is how the camera feels in your hand. Sounds silly... but if the weight isn't right or you can't grip it properly it really will effect your pictures.

Try them all out and try holding them in weird poses (kneeling, tip toes, on your belly, on your back all sorts of things) - trust me you'll get in some weird poses for shots you find yourself wanting to take. Or is that just me....

Some nice starts there Codger, keep at it and you'll learn loads really fast. The slow water needs to be slower but that can prove hard without the right combination of filters.

I need a little purchasing advice, I've found a 70-200 f4L for the right price and condition but the guy wants a bank transfer rather than PP, what kind of comeback details should I get from him in case he decides to rip me off? Asking for his address as well as his name and bank details may sound a little dodgy on my part.

I know he is legit, I just want some form of safety net in case anything were to go wrong.

Aye, it is. The 500mm and 600mm are monsters!

Anyway, some 'sports' shots from our IT footie session. I did my ankle last week so couldn't play.

                  Nice pics btw Codger.

I wouldn't think it's unreasonable to ask considering he wants to use the bank rather than PP. Express your concerns and see what he says. Anyway, enjoy your lens when you get it and welcome to Club L!

                      GT,

Nice footy pics. Did you use the 300?

I'm going to pop along to Jessops and a couple of other places on the weekend, and primarily going to be looking at the Nikon and Canon mentioned earlier in the thread. Is there anything else I should perhaps be forewarned to have a look at? How do the Sonys or Pentax match up at the same pricepoint? I'll be looking on dpreview anyway, but I'd value you guys' opinions too.

Also, does anyone know if Jessops still do the internet price match? It saved me 20% last time I bought a camera there.

For some, it was a mixture of the 70-200 and the 300mm. Though at times the 300 was too close.

Price matching does seem to vary from store to store. However you could argue that they should price match Tecno, Cameras4u and shopping4cameras.com as they are the same company!

They do seem to have managers prices instore atm.

Sony and Pentax have image stabilisation in body. Canon and Nikon prefer the stabilised lens route which some cynics claim is a way for them to squeeze more money from their users. They counter that Canon IS or Nikon VR is matched to the particular lens so will give optimum performance for that lens, as opposed to the all in one solution of in body as used by Sony, Pentax and others.

I am inclined to agree with them as the latest gen Canon IS gives up to four stops of hand holding ability compared to two stops offered by Sony's in body system. IS or VR is especially useful for longer focal lengths where keeping a steady viewfinder is difficult when handholding. Personally, after having used it on my 70-200 f/4, it's one of those things that once tried is hard to give up. My lens also has an IS panning mode which is great for capturing action like motorsports, etc.

Just took this through my patio window. Had to drop my dinner and grab my camera when I saw how close the rabbit (its wild! ) had got to the house, and THEN, the Robin came to get in on the party.

Tweaked the saturation a bit and its a bit out of focus because of shooting through the glass (and im a total photo n00b)...
