The Photography Thread

I went to the Rutland Water Butterfly Farm today, took a load of photos and came out with a few I liked. I'm now only 100 photos away from my 10,000 shot with my Nikon D50

Was really hot in there, 30 odd degrees, the camera steamed up at first but cleared after a couple of mins. Took me a lot longer, I was sweating buckets in there.




And they had stick insects too ...

OK, i know i still have a way to go yet, but here's one of my photos from seni.

The lighting there was terrible and I still only have the built in flash and kit lens for my D40, so i've done a little PP on it. Mostly contrast, bringing the light up a little and a heavy crop (too much nothing above, peoples' heads below).

Shooting at iso 800 i guess meant i was bound to have grain, but in a way i think it adds to it



Actually now i look at it again, i think maybe I should've just cropped the guy on the right out too

You've stopped the action well, and the judges add to the composition. Pity the background isn't a little more out of depth as this would bring the attention of the eye to the fighters more, it's a little distracting as is, but at f5.6 I guess you're at the limits of your kit lens

Thanks ET, was the horizon wonky or was it a hill? Nothing wrong with showing a hill as is. Keep learning though as there's not much interest in that shot.

Babs, that's a pretty good effort I think.

Went to Batemans today, Rudyard Kiplings old gaff. Unfortunately there were other people there too, lots of them!



Again, shot with the PL and the grad grey ND for the ****ty sky. There was a strange light today. I also added a cheeky vignette to help the sky a tad too.

Should've bought a Canon then! **Fanboy alert** Only kidding as they are nice shots. Maybe you could pick pick up a 85mm prime for lowlight stuff like that as f/5.6 indoors will always struggle.

It was on f5.6 automatically. I had it in shutter priority to get less blur, I'd tried aperture priority earlier but I think you can imagine how that worked out

That's the only one of mine up so far really, I'm in the process of messing about with the others and will up them when I can.

Was going to be clever and add leave the fire in colour, but I need to read up on the technique.

Alastair, looks a nice place. Pity about the people! Grey grad looks good on the sky, I should use my filters more often, but i tend to leave them at home.

That's a great shot - really nice angle to it.

Meh - and I've just looked out the window and it's tipping it down - don't think I'll be venturing out today. I'll link in a couple more of that stick insect instead, ones I didn't upload to flickr.

Wonky horizon, no focal point, uneven lighting - sorry to be negative, but you've taken far far better pictures tbh.

Thanks for the criticism guys, I appreciate it (no, seriously!).

The 'wonky' horizon was in fact a hill and you can see that by looking at the reeds and grass lines as they are straight whereas the horizon is an uneven-ish hill so there wasn't much I could do about that; I just liked the three colours contrast - gold, green and blue but the photo itself is admittedly uninteresting.

Anyway, Marty has come up with the goods (once again) with the macro photos although they are quite scary if you ask me - good sharpness and colours too! Some photos are worth sweating for, well done.

No photo opportunities today as it is 'effing raining.

And in other flickr news, this blokey decided to delete all of his comments and then abuse everyone who posted a score in the Score me Fast group - this is the sort of thing you tend to get on flickr from time to time. Very sad. I gave him 15/20 btw - remember, flickr doesn't always contain relevant appraisals.

Why have I not seen this thread before??? Some very impressive pictures here.

I'm not a photographer so I'm not exactly the person to judge on that level but I did read for a BA in fine art so I can appreciate the aesthetics even if the technical methods behind the pictures means nothing to me at all.

Nice composition, the colours are a touch on the flat side though, was that beak really grey? Mind that's better than any photo I took today
