Finally had a chance to test it like for like against the old one, the comparison isn't even worth making, keeper rate is up from about 35% to 80%. Mostly due to the auto focus actually working fast enough to catch some action. Really staggers me how damn sharp it is too

The power of the red L seems to be a bit consuming, every time I use the camera I'm dreaming of a nice 17-60 ish (dunno what the actual model would be) that would give nice sharp shots like the tele does, the cost is just ridiculous though

What's the plasticy cheap lens that "every canon owner should buy" again? I seem to remember it being decent, having a big aperture and being cheap. Thought it may come in very handy doing indoor stuff for the festival.

You mean the 50mm 1.8 one? It's about £70 new.
Apparently the current version is slightly inferior to the original one in terms of build quality, but the image quality's meant to be the same.

I really like these kind of mid-range primes. For street photography they're invaluable. If I had an SLR atm I'd be saving (and saving and saving) up for the 50mm 1.2L piece of gorgeousness. I bet that takes astounding pictures.

Thanks Magnakai, I've been doing my research on it since I posted and have found out that is the one yes.

Seems the MkI goes for up to £150 on ebay! Think I could live with the plasticness for the cheaper price!

That's ridiculous. You could get the EF 50mm 1.4 USM new for about £50 more than that, and by all accounts that's a superior lens in every way.

Get the 1.8. Yes, it's plastic and made in Malaysia, but it takes good enough pics.

The 1.2 is odd as it's less than one stop better than the 1.4, but is about four times (??) the price. You get the feeling that Canon made it because they can.

Quality seems improved in those Dan, much sharper. The tree one looks well exposed considering it must have been quite tricky in that sort of light/location.
