If you deal with Kerso outside of Ebay, he's usually a bit cheaper (no Paypal no ebay = no fees!).

I've bought a 2 lenses and 2 flash guns from him direct. Usually saving a few quid. (Though on a £50 lens the saving might not be that great).

Lovely shots over the last few days btw.

Also check out the sales thread for a bargain 5D!!!!

Another vote for Kerso, I got the 1.4x TC from him away from ebay. Chose PayPal to speed things up (2.7% I think), ordered on Thursday late PM and got it Sat first thing, great service.

Was at focus yesterday when I saw that Jacobs cut £150 off the price (down to £2150). So expect a few more sales of old gaming stuff to appear soon!

Just out of curiosity GT, why did you move from the 5D to the 1D? Do you find yourself wanting the speed and range and build more than the width of the full frame sensor?

I'd definitely love a 5D. I find myself wanting width more and more... Girth over length?

1D is full frame right?? (EDIT - done some research and now I'm confused, is it 1.2 crop instead of 1.6??)

Plus, GT already has another 5D anyway!

The 1D is a 1.3 crop, the 1DS is full frame. Alastair is right, I have 2 5D's. I intended to get the 1D last year, but with the issues on the early bodies I held off. I didn't intend on replacing it straight away. Buy I couldn't stop when I saw the discount.

I did want the 1D for the speed of some shoots, the 5D will be perfect for all the wide stuff I want to do as well. With the crop of the 1D and the 1.4ex my 300mm is equivalent to a 546mm f/5.6 lens. Which will be good for some of the Aircraft and Nature stuff I plan to do.

Gotcha, never knew that, I should try to keep up a little more! Did you see and 1DS's at the show? What price?

Also, my Dad went all the way from the south coast on Monday and all he bought was some paper and a mem card, worth the journey!!

I saw the 1DS, looks like a 1D GTi (with a bump on the bonnet!). Think the price was still in the 4000s.

I didn't spend too long at the show though. Visited the Canon stand, spoke to Dave Newton (from Eos Forums and Canon CPN) was talking about issues about focus (which seem to have been resolved). Whilst we talked, Jacobs lowered the price to clear the bodies (which they did). 2 went within a minute or so of the reduction (1 to me).

Going to Focus has saved me about £500 on the 2 occasions I've bought kit. Wednesday is a best day (unless your a freebie gatherer!) as more kit is discounted to clear.

                    This is the 1Ds MkIII

A bit of a beast, but I'm sure it's worth it. I've played with the MkII a teeny weeny bit and it felt a world apart from my 400D and my friend's 40D.

The Nikon D3's a bit cheaper but has a few less pixels.

GT, I almost went yesterday, but got a day of work offered instead, and decided I needed the money more. Like a lot more. It's probably a good thing too, as I've been on the cusp of dropping a months rent on some glass recently. It'd probably have tipped me over the edge!

I took some shots at a Late Of The Pier gig last night.

                        Here's one:

More (proper ones) to come on my Flickr later if anyone's interested.

Looking forward to the rest Mag.

Flickr has really gone to **** these last few days, it's not really on that they can't sort out the contacts feed thing as I'm missing loads of cool shots from people. Also, there seems to be loads of bugs all over the pages at the mo and I keep getting HTML pages here at work on IE - RUBBISH

Does anyone have any experience with the 17-55mm f2.8 IS? I'm seriously thinking about saving up for this one. I'm not a zoom fan, but in live concerts and clubs it's impractical to keep switching primes all the time. This seems to have the most effective range for a cropped sensor camera, plus a good aperture and IS for low-light shooting. It's not cheap, but the quality seems good.

Any thoughts or other recommendations are welcome!

There's 54 pages of example shots and impressions here. Enjoy that!! Don't know if any are of indoor low light like gigs/clubs though.

For me, f2.8 wouldn't be anywhere near big enough for gig work, maybe it's just the very few gigs I've shot but I was struggling to get a faster shutter than 1/60th at f1.8 and ISO 1000 at times.

For me I'm sticking with the 50mm f1.8 but I do see your point, can't help though as I've never used that lens let alone in those sort of conditions. What I do have is the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 (non IS obv). I would hazard an educated guess that that is a better quality lens but I would still use the 1.8 over it for gigs (clubs seem to be all about flash shots). The IS may cancel all the problems of the extra stop out I guess but I'm not an IS lover!

Blimey! Thanks for that I'll be up all night looking at those. Some beautiful pictures in that thread.

Yeah, I was mostly using the 50mm f1.8 last night, and I really found the fixed framing getting in my way. A couple of shots which could've been really great were reduced to being alright. I occasionally needed to get a bit wider, but switching to my 28mm f1.8 was such a pain that I usually missed the moment, and there's such a difference that I had to totally reconsider everything anyway. Normally I'd be happy to scamper around to get the right framing, but in gigs without a pit you're usually glued to the spot.

I haven't really had much experience with IS, but apparently you get between two and three extra stops from it, which would in theory cancel out the extra stop, at least for camera shake purposes. You'd get increased motion blur though. From the photos that I've seen, the quality of the glass is in another league to what I'm used to. The light and the shadows just look so much... better. It's sort of smoother and richer... I'm not really sure how to describe it. I noticed it that you got your L glass (how long ago was that now?), that had a similar quality to the photos. That's what I mean. [/natter]
