lovely shots everyone. I have left some comments on Flickr.

Shotski: If your new to this lark and are interested in gig work and are looking to upgrade your lens you should consider the 50mm f1.8. I have a friend at work who used this for all his concert photographs. He recently upgraded to some L glass though as he is trying to make some money from his shots and wanted the best of gear.

Marty: the detail on that last flower shot is insane. Thanks for the group invite, I have been looking for something that would inspire my artistic side and a weekly theme is a great thing.

    Edit:

I went to my parents house today to get some free prints . My pictures looked quite dark on their screen. Also when printed the pictures came out a bit darker than what I had set them up for, additionally oranges/reds could be a little over saturated. Something I will need to keep in mind for future prints.

Got myself a nice little portfolio now if ever family and friends are curious about my pictures

I don't go anywhere without a camera period - even take mine to work

Booked my holidays for this year. Not quite Las Vegas, but I'm taking a break in Guernsey - I'm hopeful there'll be some nice photo opportunities there too.

I can't get enough of my 50mm f1.8 - it really is great for live band shots and I never use the flash for my live shots. If you want to take a look at my live band work (using only that lens), take a look here.

Seriously guys, too many to comment on over the last few pages but great shots all round. Keep up the great work. I've been laid up for a while with a bad back (sciatica) and haven't been able to do any photography since the nightclub shots a couple of weeks ago and so am getting withdrawl symptoms already!! It's good to see all the great work going on though and I can't wait to add some more shots of my own as soon as I am better

Some good shots from last weekend - a friend of mine got a rather nice day ragging WRC cars on studded tyres around a frozen lake. I think the camera was rather expensive.

First half of shots above were of the WRC stage they watched. Later shots are from their private stuff on the lake as are the ones below.

            Mental!

Nutters on bikes with studded tyres too

Those shots from the rally are wow! Love them.

Dan, sorry to hear your not feeling good hope you get better soon. We need more shots of Mark Hamill lurking around in night clubs

I dont think anyone has a bad word to say about that lens, for the price its a bargain. Also if you review this thread you will see recommendations for a seller called Kerso in eBay. Well worth checking if he has any or will be getting any as you can get the glass for less than ?50 and he is quick.

I'm hoping for similar results with the Nikkor equivalent (1.8 50mm) too - been wanting to get it for a while and probably doing so in the next couple of weeks, and whilst portrait work is a major pull, gig photography is something I'd really like to get into. The major pain for me is that with the way the motor works in the D40X, I'm going to be stuck with manual focus only. Must admit I'm slightly bricking it about taking my camera out to certain places too, I'm a big fella and don't get shunted about too much but after seeing my mate break his lens yesterday my fears about having to fight to the front of a show to be able to get shutter-happy are being renewed.

Also, anyone have any tips or advice on gear to help out protecting your kit against the elements? As I keep mentioning in other threads (anyone would think I was excited ) I'm looking at venturing to Reykjavik in March, and whilst I'm keen to take as many photos as I can, I get the feeling I'll be working against lots of rain, ice, snow, etc...

In the meantime, I'll have some photos from my Dublin weekend break up soon

This is a major problem with the D40, and it bugs me that Nikon don't think that people with a budget body need prime lenses. Anyway, I've been informed that Sigma (and presumably Tamron) lenses will autofocus properly. I'd be tempted to investigate the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 if I were you. It's about ?200, but it opens up very wide, and the focal range ends up being fairly close to the 50mm normal viewpoint, which means that it's similar to your actual field of vision.

                      Hi all,

I am a total n00b at photography, however, giving serious consideration to getting into it and buying me a DSLR. I reckon my budget would be about £500 and was considering the nikon d60. Any thoughts would be welcomed.

                      Thanks

Thanks for the eBay tipp, I checked it out and it works out a fair bit cheaper than buying it in town.

Good luck wicky i just started recently and i haven't regretted it.

If you got the money then go for it wicky. The camera wont make your photographs better but it will give you more artistic control over your pictures. It also makes taking the pictures much more enjoyable.
The consequence of this is that you take more pictures and improve just through taking more pictures and learning about the mechanics of photography.

Just remember to include in your budget for all the little things like memory cards, a spare battery, shutter release cables, filters for your lenses (if you like to protect them with a UV filter). Worth considering a proper bag for your gear and maybe another lens if you need something with more reach, or a faster lens etc.

Fuse: I dont know about protecting your gear. I have a Lowepro backpack which basically protects my gear and has a waterproof cover. This covers me when I am out walking and I get caught in nasty weather.
As for the cold I am not to sure. Most people recommend you let your camera match the ambient temperatures slowly to prevent condensation. Typically when I have had it out in the cold I leave it somewhere cool in the bag before bringing it into the main house in the bag.
Lots of advice on forums for dealing with cold gear.

Like the waterfall shot MonkeySteve (can't quote it for some reason though), needs the ND filter treatment though

Another from me with the ND's, further down the stream from the previous Scotland waterfall/stream shots:

Wicky and Winky in this thread now is confusing me
