the answer is

E) Shortly after arriving in Japan the thought occurred to me that we MUST buy masks, because Japan is land of the flu masks, and also they're one of the few things I'd be able to wear in public over there without arousing suspicion, as I doubt I'd get the same laughs wearing it here in London(the shark pic got quite a few from people in the queue, cos I asked the camera guy to wait and then rummaged in the bag and got it out). I only wore it for the photos if that helps!
