ICS > Gingerbread for sure, but I don't own an xperia so can't comment on the phone.

You may want to check that your favourite apps work under ICS first. They removed a lot of APIs in that release.

what does it really give you?

Generally improved interface, unlock to camera, panorama photos, time lapse video (been having fun with that this week), will actually give you a breakdown of data usage via wifi as well as 3G...other stuff I haven't noticed too.

If there's something you want tested to see if it works on ICS I can check it for you, but I'm not paying for anything.
