Prepare for possibly the dumbest thing you've ever heard. Abbey, what a bunch of idiots.

My parents are looking to reduce their mortgage, and to do so they've bought a house worth £20,000 less than this one. In order to pay for it, they have to get a mortgage, £17,000 less than their current one. Abbey (who the current mortgage is with) look like they're going to reject this new mortgage because they don't feel that my parents can pay it. It's £17,000 less than they're already paying you, you prats!

Is there any logic in that whatsoever? My parents are going to be forced to continue paying a mortgage, because they "can't afford" one £17,000 less? Honestly.

Well, it'd probably depend on the interest rate of their existing mortgage, compared to the new one. Although, given the interest rates at the moment, you'd imagine the newer one to be less really!
