Bought a brand new car for the first time ever today. The good lady and I now have a Golf Estate 2.0TDi CR (140bhp) Sportline on the drive keeping the Boxster company.

I even managed to get a personalised plate on the car for her without her knowing. The look on her face as we pulled into the dealer was priceless.

We ordered the car late March and had a lot of delays at the factory end but I'm hoping it's going to be worth it. At least we got the 2.5% VAT saving and the newer common rail engine which is a lot more refined than the old Pumpe Duse VAG diesels.

Once I can get some pics in daylight I'll post a couple so you can all laugh and ask when we're having kids!

Anyone have any experience of Zenec headunits? Their OEM look stuff for the Golf looks the business but I've yet to see one in the plastic.

Congrats, on the Golf. I guess you cannot go wrong with that particular example of the 'people's car'

Hideous isn't it, the MR2 Ferrari "conversion" kits you see are just as bad.

The only 'decent' conversion kit I've seen is the one that turns a Peugoet 406 into a Ferrari 360. From the outside the dimensions are very similar although the Puggy actually has slightly larger doors.

I've seen a few early 911's turned into 73 Carrera RS replicas and they are stunning but being based on the same car helps. The Volkswagen based 356 replica I saw in town a few weeks back was gorgeous. The only way I knew it was a replica was the lack of Porsche badges on it.
Considering how much a real 356 costs a replica wouldn't be a bad idea.

Honda really is going on a diet. Ride the storm, I say.

                  A quickie...

What is the general consensus on keeping the clutch down at lights. etc? I have read that it's best to go into N and release the pedal when waiting. Does the latter decrease wear and tear?

Only to your left leg as far as I know!!

I can't remember why, but a mechanic told me about this a while back. i.e. don't coast down a long hill with the clutch down. It's bad for something. Can't think why this should be. Half the clutch is spinning. So what?

I went round the SLR production line (private weekend tour) in the Summer. Very cool.

It's better to use neutral than to hold the clutch down as it's less strain on the clutch release bearings.

thats for a different reason, u dont coast down a hill with the clutch down because you have effectively cut off the link between the engine and the drivetrain thus uve got no engine braking and less control over the car.

That too, but he was definitely talking about the clutch release bearings now that CMcK reminded me

Was chatting to my local fishmonger yesterday. Turns out he used to have a Sierra Cossie, with 480bhp. Which is nice. He took one look at my car and was all over it. "Pretty small turbo you've got there".... lol.

Especially if you are the mechanic that bills him for the yearly top end rebuild!

I was looking at the Mk VI Golf the other and can't say I'm all that impressed. The main dash certainly looks better than the Mk V but the door cards give a weird impression of height. It actually seems a bit claustrophobic inside.
Not convinced about the Scirocco derived front end either.

All this talk of clutch release bearings, has anyone ever had one fail before the clutch itself? I've never heard of it.

Obviously any decent mechanic would recommend changing it as a matter of course when replacing a clutch but I'm just curious if anyone's ever heard of a bearing the same age as the clutch failing first?
