I used to hate these things when they first arrived for that very reason. I thought what's the point of having self service tills, if they're constantly manned because of these problems. But now I use them exclusively because it means I don't have to talk to or look at anyone (I never buy alcohol). Also, I occasionally get a freebie when the machine ****s up and no one notices.

it may as well start flashing a red light and bringing the shop shutters down. Some of them are so sensitive that just opening a plastic bag to put your shopping in is enough to set it off grrr.

Heres a Irk just for today. The part time Guinness drinking pricks that fill up the pubs on St Patricks day, with their novelty hats, chanting along to Pogues songs.

I have nothing against the Irish cleebrating but those non Irish rugby top wearing twats can all jump into a vat of Irish Stew as far as I'm concerned.

Oh god yes, I agree with this wholeheartedly. Having had the misfortune to work for Guinness it irks me even more to see everyone falling for their marketing.

The worst part is you just can't escape from it in Japan. Probably carried over by all the Americans that think they're Irish. So people are always asking me "are you doing anything for St. Patricks day?" and I have to bite my tongue and politely explain that no, it's not an international celebration and I am Scottish so I have no reason or desire to celebrate. In fact I reckon 99% of people who celebrate it don't have a reason either. If you're going to have a random party at least do it in the name of something other than making the fat-cats at Guinness even more wealthy.

There's usually free Guiness in and around the ****ty Japanese/American/Irish mishmash-of-cultures parade in Harajuku, so I go for a few glasses of that and then clear off when I might have to pay for it. Don't like it that much anyway.

America's the worst for 'Irish' people who have next to Irish blood in them pretending they're Irish. OK, one set of your great great grandparents were irish, you're 1/16th Irish... Why aren't you celebrating the other 15/16ths?

Weirdly I didn't realise it was St. Patrick's Day yesterday. Every year I always see it splashed all over the telly and newspapers, can't avoid it, yet this year I somehow managed to miss all mention of it until checking this thread. I agree with all the irks though

Was my son's birthday yesterday (2 years old) and he's 1/4 Irish.. On his mothers side.

Can't wait till his 18th and to make it better my nephew will be 18 in the same year and his birthday is on new years eve..

Barclaycard sent me a thing about their new reward scheme (you get money instead of points, a bit like quidco or topcashback). To show how amazing it is, they have put a map on the back of retailers near me that have been invited to take part.

Except it's complete lies. I live near the coast in the middle of nowhere and there are now shops for miles around, so all the points they have put on the map are in the middle of fields or shop free villages. One of them in the sea!
