Bought a new HTC Desire on a contract with Orange yesterday. I've had it less than 24 hours and its broken already. No signal. Anywhere.

Every phone I've bought in the last few years seems to break really quickly.

EDIT: Actually it's fine now. I had to use the new SIM card they gave me after they transferred my number to it. Which is strange, because the guy in the shop told me to use my old SIM card.

The TV Licence. I wish you could buy it by the day, or week, or something.

I only want to watch the Superbowl, but I'd have to pay for a year of rubbish telly!

You need a TV Licence to watch any live telly, however it's broadcast. Even if I watch it on an iPhone I'd need a licence!

Really? So if you lived in a bin and had no TV licence you would have to get one to watch anything on your iPhone? Does my household one cover my phone then?

You will have to wait for clips on youtube or other sites then? Because technically these are videos and not broadcast? If I had the capibility I would put it on youtube for you!

They keep changing the policies about TV License ownership and, IMO make it as vague and open-ended as possible to scare people into owning one even if they technically do not need one...

Yeah the TV license is a bit bull**** but at least there's nothing directly forcing you to pay it to decrypt terrestrial TV or anything. And there's really nothing to stop you watching iPlayer/4od and CatchupTV as much as you want anyway without ever paying.

They have something similar in Japan, everyone is expected to pay NHK for the right to watch telly. It's not enforced here though, not legally nor even by threats of legally.

The NHK man comes to the interphone, if I answer I say "Sorry I'm a foreigner I don't understand" and if my fiancee answers she says "I'm sorry I don't live here"
