As for being replaced by HTML5, maybe it will be at some point. But right now, a ridiculous amount of websites use Flash for content and videos. So that point has no relevance until it has actually been replaced by HTML5.

Personally, I can't help feeling the amount of apps they have sold that are paid conversions of free Flash games has not gone unnoticed. It may not be the deciding factor but it would certainly lessen the incentive to offer Flash.
Isn't you tube encoded in flash

Yep. Along with almost all videos on the net now.

Yeah, I don't fancy downloading an app for every single flash video site on the net thanks. >_<

Surely it's because they'd have to pay licencing royalties to Adobe if they supported Flash?

HTML5 won't take off in the iPad's lifetime. As far as I'm aware, the only PC browser that supports it is the IE9 beta.

Adobe would quite happily put a flash plugin on the iphone for free. They make their money from the creation software.

All the browsers support some parts of HTML5 but the standard hasn't been rectified yet so it's pretty inconsistent. Given the huge amount of drama over <video> it could be a while before the standard is finalised.

It's also far slower that Flash at the moment. Javascript was never designed for complex multimedia.

So given that it plays youtube vids fine, doesn't that technically mean it supports flash in some way or another.

As for flash banners and the like, im sure we can all live without them, i know i can.

No. Youtube just streams the videos in the right format for Quicktime to understand, as it does on the iPhone/iPod. The Flash you see on youtube just plays those video files.

To be honest, I'm not fussed about the lack of Flash in the slightest. But I am incredibly against Apple saying what people can, and can't, develop with.

it uses specific .h264 vids rather than flash video (which is why some videos aren't available).

Flash also has quite a few handy uses outside of banner ads. Most advanced file uploaders (with progress bars and multiple files at the same time) use flash for example.

The cat playing Noby Noby Boy is possibly one of the greatest things I have seen during my 29 years on this planet!!

Truly brilliant and has certainly cheered up my day.

                            Thanks John.

How restrictive is the youtube app on these Apple products, can you only view a selection of videos on? Cheers.

It's usually fine, but you get the odd one that won't work.
