New York including 6% sales tax = $530 dollars = approx ?360, for 16GB entry model.

    Are we being shafted again?

Wait on the Tegra 2 tablets, you'll get a lot more for your money. Heck the next range of ULV Atoms should be good (approaching ARM levels of battery life)

They must be joking with those prices!
        No thanks!

Incidentally, Archos are doing their home 7" tablet for $199 which will probably translate to £150. Only a 600mhz ARM Cortex A8 CPU and WVGA screen but it comes with android so will have a reasonable amount of flexibility.

$499 (price without tax) is ?337 at today's rate. Add on VAT, and this is ?404. Which is less that ?429, but not a millon miles away.

Factor in the likelihood that the ? will fall further against the $ over the next few months, and Apple's price isn't unreasonable. I'd love it to be lower, but it isn't Apple's fault that the ? is weak as ****.

At an "unbelievable price" no less.

No no, it's a 'magical' price

It's actually an unbelievably magical price

I don't think I'll get one. I can't think of any situation I'd want to use it where it would be so much more convenient than my 13 inch MacBook Pro. That's already small enough and has a long enough lasting battery that I use it for casual living room web surfing and such like.

I'd really like to get one since both my wife and I would get plenty of use out of it.

However, at those prices it's just not possible...that price is halfway to the new TV I want, and I want a new TV a lot more.

This... this is what I thought too but the thing that irks me is that you can't have different user profiles or settings etc... I'd want my bookmarks, wife would want hers. No dice at the moment unfortunately.

"Nice to use" isn't enough to get £430 off me. I'd just get annoyed at all the things it couldn't do as well. If my Macbook can't do something I download something so that it can. Apple's walled garden doesn't guarantee I can do that on iPad.

I sold my 13" Macbook Pro at the end of last year and have decided to hold off on replacing it with a newer one, so am trying an iPad instead. So far, so good, certainly proves that for most of my time, a laptop was overkill for what I do.

Truth be told, a laptop is probably overkill for what a lot of people do. Unfortunately, this country is overwhelmed with sub £300 laptops that also tend to do with what the majority of people want... so overkill they may be, but cheaper they are yes hmmm.

I think they may struggle over here. But then I said that before the US release, and I seem to have misjudged that market too.

Will be interesting to see. I've tried netbooks and didn't get on with them at all, so will see how the iPad goes. 2 weeks in and it's exceeded my expectations.
