The truth may be along the lines of the US government wanting to carry out the kind of interrogations that's got them in hot water in the past, so much safer to claim the guy's dead so that no one kicks up a fuss during the torturing and then after its completed and he's been killed the evidence can be released, no one will be able to disprove when the evidence came from.

At the end of the day our nations' prosperities are based on exploitation around the world, being the target of terrorism is quite understandable. It's the price we have to pay for our foreign policy over the years.

I think that without religion, we would've found other reasons to slaughter eachother. Warmongering is within man's genes.

But the photo was a confirmed fake; the intelligence didn't release any footage of this action yet. But take it that hes dead, faking this would only fuel the fundamentalists for nothing and thats not what we would want.

This operation holds not much more than symbolic value. It won't stop terrorism, and it won't stop other Bin Ladens to step up the plate and cause more bloodshed in retaliation. Its good that he's dead, and that the people finally have their revenge on the main 9/11 culprit. But thats pretty much it. What it did cause was rising Obama's popularity from zero to hero. He's probably set for the next elections.

I felt kind of mixed about the chanting Americans on the streets. They despised the extremists from doing just that, yet they do the same. Even though I understand that one side was about countless civs and the other about a terrorist.

In reality Bin Laden probably wasn't the main threat anymore. He was in constant hiding, Al Qaida's being run by others. Terrorism sadly has many, many faces.

Latest comment is that the US military hoped to capture him alive, whilst preparing for a confrontation. Bin Laden apparently took his own daughter-in-law hostage. He probably wanted it this way.

They did a DNA test on him to confirm. I don't know whether they will release the results.

And when they went into his room they found a well where he had been drowning puppies!

The more orchestrated the information release and the more OTT it's being made to sound, the more cynical it makes me.

The whole "BIN LADEN'S MILLION DOLLAR COMPLEX!" thing being repeated by the various media outlets made me laugh. $1mill would build a pretty pathetic fortress. That'd buy you what... 1/30th of the helicopter that crashed/was shot down?

These scenes unsettle me. I feel like we should brace ourselves for something.

Gives the feeling that this war has just been restarted from zero. Wouldn't be surprised if we get another string of attacks as we got in the early 2k's. And with the state of the current economy... not good.

Perhaps some are interested in 9/11 from a non-American viewpoint:

Its some al jazeera insider who manages to go into al qaeda and talk personally to some head honchos, among them the nowadays captured Mastermind of 9/11 Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. Just facts and motivations, nothing bs.

Osama getting killed wont change a thing. Osama even said after 9/11 if he died the next day his mission was complete, so now we have Al- Queda in Arabian Penilsla probably calling Osama a martyr and trying to avend his death.

I thought he had died years ago apparently since recordings had been verified as not being him when released etc..

I agree the euphoria shown by some people in the US is a bit scary, since I'm only assuming here, but most people in that picture probably had no direct connection to the people who died in 9/11.

If say, someone killed the Queen and then we found and killed the person who did it, would British people have a similar show like people in the US have done?

I can understand the feeling of revenge but is it right to cheer anyone's death no matter how evil they may be? Surely that display of celebration will rile enemies even more..

                        Kung Lao fatality maybe?

Interested to see whether they will release the burial video, as there is zero chance any footage of the assault will see the light of day unless some brave soul leaks it to Wikileaks.

Not gonna happen in my lifetime.

A tiny minority of Muslims do celebrate terror attacks and we criticise them for it, are you saying it's acceptable when we (the west) celebrate what are in effect state sponsored terror attacks?

As for Bin Laden deserving a worse death, maybe he did, maybe he didn't, but could you administer what you propose? Could you torture him to death and still feel happy, still go about your day-to-day life as normal? Or are you saying he deserved a slow, painful death but the responsibility of carrying out such a deed and the dreadful guilt and sense of ill-being that surely accompany a man after such an act are somebody elses to shoulder?

It's depressing how quick we are are to deal out death in judgement. So much for being an enlightened species, we ain't even intelligent.

Right, we're all just as bad as one another, or at least have the potential to be so inside us all.

I don't think this would happen in UK which is why sweeping generalisations such as 'the west' and 'the Muslim world' should be avoided.

I'm wondering when the awkward qurstions start for Pakistan.
