The best way to stop the old bulbs blowing is to leave them on. It's the constant heat cycling that causes the metal fatigue to failure. There's a lightbulb in some firestation with their own backup generators that has allegedly been on since the fifties. Or since the dinosaurs or something.
Stuffs up the planet though. Although you could sign up at ecotricity and feel much better about just leaving them on all the time. And get both you and me some wine at the same time.
Or switch to LED bulbs. Or you can get "sunlight" a-like natural bulbs. My dad has one in a reading light and it's very impressive.
These guys have old style bulbs still: http://www.lightbulbs-direct.com
