What I find interesting about all this is if the police / army get involved and dole out extreme punishment, the same tactics will be used for any future civil disorder or perhaps 'real' protests which may occur for real reasons, not just an excuse to lash out and loot like these riots. A precedent will have been set.


I read somewhere else that there's a lot of kids / youngsters involved who have no real meaning in their lives so destruction like this can seem appealing.

Some people online (Youtube etc) are bringing race into it, but I think it's about underpriveliged people of all skin colours going nuts, for whatever reason.

Surely we're some way off that yet? Do the UK Police even have water cannons and riot rounds to use any more? I would have thought that would have been up next if things escalate rather than bringing in the Killbots.

I really don't think it will turn into a black/white thing but some people will obviously come to that assumption. It's fairly clear to a lot of the country that this is purely a minority class division - young chavs with nothing better to do. We all know the type, see them all the time.

I am thinking of the Man/Woman with the gun who has to pull the trigger with a live round in it. The person who might have been in a war to protect the future of the guy he is firing at. That has to be a mind f**k surely.

We are quick to shout bring in the Army yet we give no thought to the men and women who might be firing within their borders. What does it mean for them? how does it effect them to be kitted up, rifle in hand standing in the streets they might have grown up in?

Like Spatial I am wondering where the police are with their tear gas and water cannons.

We know that but I remember a 2 US news paper report of 2 separate looters after Katrina, one black and one white. One headline read Looter and the other opportunist.

These riots seem to be spreading closer and closer to me. Kingston must be pretty much next on the list after Wimbledon and Clapham Junction et al started getting hit.

Sitting here as Sim-Mayor of London I'd say this is the option. Declare a curfew, anyone still on the streets within X hours will be rubber bulleted on site.

Sounds severe but if this keeps up someone innocent is going to be killed.

Deputy Mayor of London has just admitted they don't have a water cannon and one's never been used on the mainland.

Can see that changing after this.
