Newsnight tweet, from the Guardian site:

No one from the government was available to appear on #newsnight tonight to talk about London riots

Maybe sound stupid but why's all this happening? I've been under a rock the last few weeks working like a banshee and missed all this until tonight. All the news is just talking about now, I wanna know how it started please?

Guy with (alleged) gang ties shot dead in London by police. One police officer shot in that event but it hit his radio, turns out later it was a police bullet.

          Chaos ensues.

Bloody hell. So that has made hundreds of people go mental and vandalise and loot for the sake of it? Idiots.

This is crazy, just been following it online. Honestly, the scum in this country is just embarrassing. When will it end?

What a hateful little ****. Can we unban the c-word? I really need it for this post.
                  Typical.

Clearly Griffin doesn't watch the same news as everyone else. There are plenty of white looters and plenty of black people put out by this (families etc).

If anything, this is a chav blitz. I hope someone burns down Nick Griffin's home and attacks his family.

Beyond that, the violence is getting beyond the joke now. These opportunistic sh*ts are bringing the country to its knees. There's a lot of criticism of the police, but I don't think they're at all prepared for this.

I thought NG and the BNP had chosen to (supposedly) back off targeting black British people and accept them even in recent years? Is this an opportunity to get back in the papers after the party almost imploded?

I'm surprised this one hasn't ended already to be honest. But I think there's going to be much more of this. I can't quite make sense of the police shooting trigger and how that was handled but, like NI kicking off again recently, it seems to be more a case of civil unrest. As you say, plenty of what you've called scum involved. I can't speak for London but, here in Ireland (where we're much too accepting to bother going rioting or looting), the divide between rich and poor is growing, resentment is building that the people being helped out by stripping the taxpayers are the private banks and the effect that is having on society is growing slowly.

Before long, we have a whole bunch of people who have nothing to do but feel hard done by or angry or, like many of these seemingly, just plain bored and looking for trouble for lack of anything else. Good ol' fashioned civil unrest.

Society is currently failing a lot of people. And, yeah, many of them... well I hesitate to use the word scum but, yeah... still, it's failing more and more people every day who weren't brought up that way. And, personally, rolling over and being docile about it when society is shafting people doesn't seem right to me.

But looting and aimless violence is pretty horrific. And completely wrong. At least get together and start a revolution, you bunch of tits (not you guys, the looters). This is just painful to watch.

I can only hope I'm wrong about us seeing much more of this in the near future.

Well i can see some drastic changes being implemented soon on the back of this.....possibly armed police, and not just tasers.

I have been discussing the state of society for years with my family/friends, and knew that the soft nature of this country would end up resulting in something drastic one day, although this all still comes as a shock.

For me, and i'm sure many may disagree, the problem is that since discapline has been gone from peoples upbringing(especially in benefit/low income areas) the standards have just completely gone out of the window......and now way beyond the point of no return.

Do gooders will no doubt make excuses to an extent(although i cant see one good reason for this), but when people are burning buildings and in many cases, peoples livelyhood/family heritage, the is nothing left but to class them as worthless scum unworthy of a civilsed society.

The army should be made up of 99% of these kind of people......send them to deal with explosives in afghanistan, save the robots.

One thing will force serious action, and thats this thing spreading into the posh areas of london.

In all honesty though its surely a matter of time before the army become involved.

Teressa May is getting on my thrupenny bits. She's actually trying to convince people that they've handled this whole thing well.

Really? Because where from where everyone else is standing the Police are ill prepared, have lost control and anarchy now seems to be spreading across the UK.

Although this popped up on Twitter and made me laugh

At least now we have a full on 1980's revival.

Riots, high unemployment, Tories, bad clothes and ****e music!

                            I blame Thatcher.

"Reaping what has been sown over 3 decades of creating grotesquely unequal society, with alienated young copying ethos of looting bankers."

                              - John McDonnel MP

The pretty much sums up how I feel about the situation. There is so much bad feeling in parts of London and often it is to do with how the local authorities and government ignores the needs of it's people whilst taking more from them but giving less back.

I worked in a parking group in London and got to see how they made money hand over fist, whilst making appealing was made far to difficult or troublesome. It was a department of bullies given governmental authority, put in place after the people had voted against it's institution. I had horrible experiences with the medical care, where the doctors would fob you off or not even address your problems. Or had a friends uncle who was left to die in a hospital, until his family started showing up and the staff realised they were going to be in a lot of trouble. I got to see the inside of a West London Hospital on a visit and it was a world apart from the shoddy building serving my council. Or had a family member call the police after a serious car writing-off crash, only to have them just refuse to show up.

Fortunately for myself, I am mobile enough to get out of the area, but very very many people are not. The spend day after day being kicked in the teeth with price hikes, unfair charges and being ignored by their government. The result, bitterness, hatred, frustration and discontent. Show many people a store that has forgotten to lock it's doors and most would call the owners or at least leave it alone. Do the same with people who feel like they are being ripped off and overcharged and something snaps inside them. They feel that "since I am being cheated, what is wrong with me doing it to someone else?"

Happy and content people generally don't riot. I am sure that many of these are opportunists, but for there to be so many, something is SERIOUSLY wrong. I in no way condone these riots, but the government has brought this on us.

BBC say a Sony distribution warehouse is ablaze. Wonder if the PS3s in there were nicked before it went up.This and the stock market crash all feels like 2012 apocalypse is starting up early
