Yesterday evening I bought a traditional Finnish kalakukko which, as a straight translation would be "fish cock" or "fish rooster" (don't ask me why). Basically it could be called a pie probably, it has a thick bread crust made from rye dough and it's filled with fish, traditionally vendace (is that correct?) or perch and fatty pork. It's really good when served out of the oven with some butter or even straight out of the fridge cold. Pretty expensive though.

(I know, it doesn't look really appetizing, but the taste is really good. Honest. )

Sounds gross and looks like a massive feeshus but I imagine it's quite nice! The name intrigued me, so I looked it up and Wikipedia said this:

An average Finnish-speaking person today finds the name somewhat amusing, as kala is Finnish for "fish" and kukko is "rooster", leading to the oft used but non-morphological translation, "fish cock". However, the archaic form of kukko is derived from the same root as kukkaro (purse)
though 'fish purse' doesn't exactly make it sound any more appealing...

Heheh, the Finnish food culture is also known from such delicacies as "black sausage" (actually probably close to English "Black pudding") and the traditional Easter dessert "m?mmi". You can probably guess what the former looks like and the latter, well...

East meets west in a half roast chicken dinner mixed with some sort of egg fried rice as we ran out of potatoes.

Last nights meal I cooked for the mrs:

Baked Salmon with Salt & Pepper Crispy Skin
Asparagus wrapped in prosciutto with Parmesan flakes
Roast whole baby potatoes flavoured with garlic & rosemary
Tartare Sauce (recipe stolen from Jamie Oliver's 30min meals)

Worked awesome, tasted amazing and yes I am bloody proud of myself.

I juggled making beans on toast (with grated cheese!) AND eggy soldiers earlier. Both turned out well.

I know, my awesomeness is intimidating isn't it.

Continuing with a vegetarian theme this week and I shall be making Malaysian Spiced Tofu with Noodles for tonights tea.

Recipe from the BBC, slighty sceptical as most of Simmon Rimmer's recipes turn out to be terrible.

Aromatic, rich and spicy – proof, if you ever needed it, that vegan food is anything but bland. This vegan noodle soup with crispy tofu is full of flavour.

Thai curry from a kit (Muji), not bad but not as good as Mae Ploy paste.
