?100 a month for 18 years is about half of ?40k, obviously you'll earn interest and whatever but you'll need interest rates to pick up dramatically for that much!
Not that I'm bashing it whatsoever, if I ever have kids it's something I've always thought I'd do as something similar was done for me too. My gf is less fortunate and only had ?500 from when some bank was taken over by Nationwide (or something like that!)
That's because in our era up the road you were told to get a job or else!
Same here, growing up with Glaswegian grandparents. I broke into my career quite by accident just after turning 16. Out of school Friday, into work by Monday.
Best move I ever made, looking at all my 'educated' debt-ridden friends.

Yes and it was the same for me . Mum said If was to leave school I must get a Job and pay Lodge . But lets remember back in our day when leaving school there were more Jobs to go around and far more Factory jobs for those leaving school with little or no GCSE's and we weren't out priced by cheaper Eastern Labour from the EU.
I really feel sorry for School leavers today, because there isn't much work out there for them and nothing to like when I left school.
My old dear made it clear to me at 16 that the best thing I could do was get a trade, as i'd never be out of work. So that's what I did, and she's been right. 22 years i've worked in this industry, with the last 10 years in a specialist field. Through hard work i've got myself in to a place where I have a very good work position with a salary that is reflected by it. There wasn't a lot of choice in our household as I was brought up solely by my mum and the house needed money coming in. I'm glad she instilled that work ethic in me though as it's got me where I am today.

Good work ethic is fine , but leaving school now and trying to get in the Work ladder to when most of us here (gamers in their 30's) is a lot different .Lots of Factory's have pulled out, there's less shops in the High Street, less apprenticeships and so on, its now very hard for people to get on the work ladder even if they've been installed with good work ethics
Definately. I know people with great degrees having to work in the local pub earning too little to fully support themselves. Part time jobs, at least here, do seem to be up for grabs all the time but competiton is fierce - the tiny shop my girlfriend works at paying minimum wage gets inundated with cvs every time there is a job opening (and part time at that).
The worst thing for us youngsters seems to be that unless you have experience, you can't get a job (even shop work), but you can't get experience without a job. Sure, you can do voluntary work/work for free but that ain't going to get you off support, be it from parents or the govt, and it still doesn't guarantee a paid job at the end of it either, as my girlfriends brother with a 1st class masters has recently found out - the company he was at just isn't getting the business it would need to take him on too.
I'll admit its something I am quietly ignoring at the moment and will need to overcome in the not too distant future myself...
