@mr_sockochris:
The riddle is:
"‘It’s 3am, the doorbell rings and you wake up. Unexpected visitors! It’s your parents and they are here for breakfast. You have strawberry jam, honey, wine, bread and cheese. What is the first thing you open?’"
My irk:
I decided I should watch more Japanese telly to improve my listening skills. I haven't watched any since I rearranged my room 4-5 months ago as the TV was moved too far from the socket. Plus it's awful, as you probably know.
I went to a shop last night and noticed the price for 15m of coax cable + two end connectors was the same as 8m of ready-made stuff. I'm missing doing cool DIY things so bought the bits and made the cable. Everything was hunky dory but the Open University channel, Housou Daigaku, doesn't work - its signal is around 40-45% compared with the 70-90% I get with all the other channels.
I'm irked because it's the main channel I wanted to watch.
Tonight I'll move the TV closer to the socket and try the cable it originally came with. If it works then I'll try redoing my cable. I get the feeling I may have mucked the shielding up. New connectors are about 2 quid each, though, and they don't seem designed to be reused.
Another irk: Being from the UK. So many things are worse in other countries I've been to, like TV, chocolate and diluted drinks like Ribena. The number of countries I could live in that would have better examples of all three is probably miniscule.

I go through phases of watching Japanese TV, but ultimately I'm not too keen on it. The digital terrestrial channels at least. One half of the channels are variety shows, the rest are shopping channels. And if you're like me and really don't like variety shows, then you're pretty screwed.
It doesn't help that I actually pay my NHK fee. Unfortunately the NHK guy decided that he was allowed to walk into my apartment without knocking (I kid you not) and thus saw the TV. See, I don't mind paying the TV licencing fee in the UK because not only is the BBC decent, but it also goes towards paying for other things such as the iPlayer, BBC website, radio, the news, and more risky programming such as Sherlock. By contrast, Japanese people have to pay a similar fee for two rather mediocre channels and none of the extra stuff.

Chocolate? Try Crunky or any of the special kitkats - lemon is still the best one I've had.
You're in Japan! If you're not drinking green tea, you're doing it wrong. 伊右衛門 (いえもん)is my favourite. The bottled stuff is extremely strong and very much an acquired taste.

But... I'm at work in the day and I don't like anime
I do like Japanese chocolate, though. What I meant is finding all three of those things in a single country is difficult(maybe I'm asking too much?). Kit Kat is not worth the price in my eyes other than as a curiosity, but I might give one of the groovy flavours a go. I usually get the Meiji bars of chocolate or, if I'm feeling sexy, Black Thunder. There's a beautiful, beautiful sweet potato chocolate but it costs Y20 a piece.
I'm perfectly happy to do Japan wrongSeriously, I don't really enjoy green tea that often. I'm a lightweight and tea usually keeps me awake so I don't drink it in the evenings. So far I'm getting by on orange and apple juice because it's cheap, though.
