My former colleagues had the theory that the first extension is always one year only. Same is true of the spouse visa (I changed from a 3 year work visa to a 1 year spouse visa that actually expired earlier than my original permit. We questioned them on it and they cheekily said it was because our relationship may not last.)

What you and Darwok say tallies with what I've found elsewhere on the internet but it can't hurt to ask for a longer period and see what happens: if they wrote one year then I expect immigration would just give one year regardless of how many renewals I've had. Especially for contract work. Why would immigration grant a longer visa if I was working for a dispatch company on contract? Or maybe they do?
If it's only a year then no big deal. I'm looking at flats around central so popping to immigration will take a lot less time than it does now(plus, being an actual company employee, I won't lose money like I have done so far - 6000Y gone each time due to taking three hours off)

My Mum's boyfriend smokes weed in the house. Initially my Mum didn't want to accept he even smoked it but now she's allowing him to smoke in the house, justifying it by saying he's done it a long time.
Fair enough, it's her house after all.
My irk is that the entire downstairs reeks of the stuff, and that's where I reside. I've now got a headache because of it. Same thing happened last week.. Bah.

Oh I don't need that because I came here last year under the new system. I've been out of Japan twice so far and there was nothing extra to do.
Smile: gf thought Ghost Busters was Ghost Bastards. All this time she never thought to check. She also thought bastard meant a male dog because bitch is female dog and people keep naming their dogs that(read: buster)
