My smile: Installing Linux. Seriously, they've got it down pat. I can even VNC in to deal with the install remotely. I'm on lunch now in the canteen doing just that.

In fact, Linux in general. Considering how user-friendly Windows is supposed to be, Linux often runs fine and works with all the hardware(especially network and wireless adapters) once it's booted. Windows can be a pain in that respect(although I prefer an insecure Windows install not being allowed loose on the company network until it's locked down a bit!) but they're getting better.

Still, at least Windows 7 doesn't sit there waiting with a bunch of TCP/IP setup questions ten minutes in like XP and older used to! That was annoying!

@kryss: The Amiibo story is brilliant. I actually have the Kirby one as a mate bought it for me after I told him I wanted to try registering it with the clocking in/out machine at work. It won't recognise it so he is literally sitting on the desk facing the window. They draw the blinds at night so he doesn't get to see the starry sky, though.

You do realise it's the plot from Ted right?

I decided to upgrade to Yosemite so I headed to Akihabara this afternoon and got an SSD for my Macbook. After much searching, I also found a DVD drive caddy thing which means I can have the SSD and the HDD running together. The machine is an old 2009 uMB with a 2GHz Core 2 Duo so doesn't set the world on fire. I was apprehensive but my smile-causing dirt-cheap 8GB RAM upgrade made me reconsider.t

It's ruddy lovely. Smooth as butter and 100 times better than the in-place upgrade to Mavericks I tried(I'm sure Mavericks would've been smooth if I'd done a clean install, too).

Ok the real reason I upgraded is because my gf is really pissed at me for updating her iTunes and she says the new one is a PITA to use so I need to learn it to help her out then I can say she should just accept progress like the Apple boy I am.

It also means I can use OpenEmu instead of RetroArch although I finally got RetroArch working very well.

Next task is symbolic links so I can split my home folder between the SSD and HDD. But it's bedtime, I think.

It's super cool that you do that, but currently no one else can see any of the avatars except yours.

Eight months into my job and I've sort of finally started asking people if they've tried turning it off and on again in Japanese. Keeping it succinct and simply asking if they've rebooted(再起動しましたか) but it's my automatic response to whatever the problem is so it's definitely a start
