On the plus side, I assume you didn't go through university, come out with huge student debt and have to spend the next 10 years slaving away just to pay it back.

Also I see that Ernest and Young have removed "degree" from their criteria for job interviews. They said there's no correlation between having a degree and the quality of employee longer term.

Not really a post for the irk thread

Having a mobile phone is irking me. It's the first morning of my week off of work and someone has phoned me on a private number, then immediately phoned my house when I didn't answer. Even avoiding it makes me stressed and anxious. I don't even care what they want, I just want to be left alone.

I hate talking on the phone but getting rid of a mobile one prior to looking for a job seems like I'd be shooting myself in the foot, sadly. I might dump the smartphone and go with a PAYG burner for job hunting alone.

Make sure you snap it in half and drop it in a bin after every call.

This only irks me on the condition that it is not faked......as i find it hard to believe most things i see

Cut to about 5 min...now trying to put out a fire by putting it on some cardboard boxes.....then trying to stub the fire out using a cardboard box and then leaving the cardboard box on the fire is not a good idea

Jesus Christ, get some perspective. Is this the first word that has to be completely stricken from the English language? What if I had been talking about stuff for putting out fires, would it be alright then?

You make one word into a 'pariah' word and it just gets replaced by another, until that becomes the new offensive term. We need to erase words altogether, then people can't possibly offend anyone with their attempts at communication.

I object to the use of the word 'daft' as a substitute, because I had an auntie who was a bit daft and it offends me. Please change it to 'idiotic'. Would that be kosher if it offends idiots? Can I say kosher? I don't even know what to type. (Sorry to all the Christians for my earlier slip.)
I don't believe that I overreacted in the slightest; that was the second time in a matter of days that you had used that word (it definitely came up in the Alien sequel thread).

I won't be drawn into a debate but I will say this; you clearly have no concept of the hurt that term causes to thousands of families and individuals across the world on a daily basis. Some words become ugly because society moves on from basic ignorance of anyone or anything that differs from the norm; this is not political correctness, it is just common decency.

Saw that on Twitter last night, do we know what happened to the guy and the flat? Some people said a woman died but that was linked to another fire.

The incident is several day old now.
I PMd Darwock about it at the time. He wasn't singled out in any way; he's not the first person to use that term either; that word has been used hundreds of times on these forums over the last few years. We all know that no harm was meant by it.
I appreciate that over the years it has become a word that some find offensive. The English language is very rich so it'd be nice if we could all (I bet if I searched I'd find that I've used it on here in the past) try not to use it and instead find an alternative. We're not in the business of banning free speech or censoring everything but I'm sure we can all use an alternative word to get our point across. We should consider this to be an end to this particular topic of conversation. If anyone has anything else to say on the matter though please feel free to PM me rather than dragging it on in here.

That video made me go buy a fire extinguisher today so it did some good, at least. They're the most popular item on amazon Japan as well

I'm pretty sure I (and a lot of people if they were honest) would have made the mistake he did, in thinking that a large sheet of cardboard would be enough to smother a small fire. If that's the closest thing to you when a small fire breaks out and you can easily cover it, I think a lot of people would try. When it caught fire and he just left it there, that was phenomenally stupid, but I guess there's not really any way to explain how people react when they're panicking. It's easy to sit here and say "oh yeah well I'd have done exactly all the things I was supposed to do" and most people probably would do the right stuff, but you never really know.

Had TF Devastation pre-ordered at Play-Asia. They attempted to charge my card for shipping yesterday, and Santander blocked the transaction and stopped my card.

Cue a 45 minute international call from Japan to the UK (mostly on hold) to get it unlocked, and be told that they stopped the transaction because it came up as being a Hong Kong retailer. Now I'm fairly sure I have used Play-Asia extensively in the past.

From now on I'm always taking the PayPal option. Can't afford the phone bills.

Do you use a VoIP app for international calls? I use Vonage(but I've forgotten my login along with 3 quid of credit) and Viber isn't bad. It's only about 2Y/minute to the UK and I use www.saynoto0870.com for 0800/0845-style numbers. Also, Skype can aparently call free-phone numbers in the UK and other countries for free:
