I’d love to see the cost of furlough compared to the money propping up industries and businesses.

This is what happens when you use public money to underwrite all the risk, and let the financial sector reap the benefits come-what-may. The taxpayer will foot the lot, as per. Just like in 08, where once again, profits were privatised and losses socialised.

Either that or the debt magically disappears just like how the money all magically keeps appearing. They can't realistically increase tax any more and expect people to also spend more to boost the economy.

Next up, NHS is going to be stealth sold off to pay for this debt.

Im convinced this was the govs plan all along.

Economy has shrunk by 2% for the first three months of the year. However, for just March when the lockdown was in effect for just one week it dropped by 5.8% highlighting how grim the April to June figures will be. The figure for March is the worst since records began in 1997.

We’ll be in a state of partial lockdown until next February at the earliest, and things will never be back to normal. Governments will become even more authoritarian and nationalistic, for a start, and businesses like restaurants and cinemas will never return to viability.

Did I ever tell you how my loony Brexiteer dad kept on ranting about how Brexit will enable Britain to “get Ireland back from Brussels”? FFS.

Hoooooo boy. He's probably best not bringing that up with many Irish people.

I think people cling to the hope that life will be back to normal because it just gives you something to aim for.
I'm desperate for life to go back to the way it was

I'm supposed to be going to Vegas at the end of November & that's is about the only thing seeing me through this is the hope that it will still happen.
Honestly things need to start turning a corner soon, we can't keep going the way we are.

I personally wouldn't go anywhere near the US this year their response has been woeful and their death will continue to grow even more so now that that many states have abandoned lock downs. its not going away their anytime soon, Somewhere as crowded as Vegas will be super dangerous too.

I haven't been able to afford a decent holiday in years and was really looking forward to one this year as for the first time in ages both my wife and i are earning decent wages, but ive kind of come to terms with the fact that its not gonna happen this year, I fully expect some sort of social distancing measures remaining for pretty much the rest of the year and most likely into 2021 as well.

Can't really disagree, we must have either a vaccine or treatment or we can't really move forward and that will take longer than six months.

As for returning to normal, things will, just like after they did after WWII but probably less of a change or what they call the 'new normal'. Some politician will probably stick an 'unprecedented' in the phrase just for good measure.

It's interesting hearing about other countries approach to this like Sweden and Japan. Japan doesn't seem to have had it anywhere near as bad as most others yet have the oldest population and one of the most densely populated. They never went into a full lock down and now appear to be about to ease the measures they have used. How have they avoided the worst of this?

Sweden have 6X the death rate as neighbouring Finland and Norway.

I know and I don't like the comparisons between Sweden and us as there are many factors that should make it easier for them to control this compared to us. Japan however I would've thought would be much worse due to their age, population and no full lockdown.
