WTF? Who on earth (besides Americans) think imperial measurements are useful? I can't stand imperial despite fully understanding them. I was born in 1975, a time when both were in use but man, metric is so much better.

I honestly remember that we had a school bus driver when I was a kid who used to bitch about how, at 13, we'd been at school too long and should be working, but society was broken and let us piss around at school.

I've always felt a form of national service (though not military) would be a good thing; but I also only think it works in a nation that's competent about the implementation of such things and we clearly aren't. We'd half-arse it, it'd yield no positive benefit and somehow some Tory would get rich(er) off it. But I like the idea if nothing else.
