Fun fact: both lemons and potatoes can be used to power a light bulb.

Another thing. You'd think with all this hot, sunny weather that there was a way to harness it and use that to power stuff?
CAMBRIDGE, MA—Stating that they just want to make sure it’s something everyone keeps in mind going forward, an international consortium of scientists gently reminded the world Wednesday that clean energy technologies are pretty much ready to go anytime. “We’ve got solar, wind, geothermal—we’re all set to move forward with this stuff whenever everyone else is,” said Dr. Sandra Eakins, adding that researchers are also doing a lot of pretty amazing things with biomass these days. “Again, we’re good to go on this end, so just let us know. You seriously should see these new hydrogen fuel cells we have. Anyway, just say the word, and we’ll start rolling it out.” At press time, representatives from the world’s leading economies had signaled that they would continue to heavily rely on fossil fuels until they had something more than an overwhelming scientific consensus to go on.

We really are a ****ing dumb species. We'd rather watch the world burn then turn our backs on some digital numbers that allows you to own more **** you don't need.
We have the means at our finger tips and don't move towards it.

Ultimately it's capitalism. Lack of supply drives up demand, and demand drives up price.

The providers of energy have literally no reason to do a better job. They're a machine which is built specifically to maximise revenue, which means they should find the breaking point of the country, then dip a few pence and stop there. People say Capitalism/the free market finds solutions, but that's not true - it's about finding "the worst people will put up with".

Sometimes that aligns with what people actually want, and that's fine. But often it isn't, and it definitely isn't for energy. It needs to be renationalised ASAP and run for the public good.

How have Labour not absolutely eviscerated the Tories on this?

                    Keir, here's a freebie.

"Truss, do you support renationalisation of energy?"
                    "No."
"Oh, so you WANT to us to give HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS to FRANCE and GERMANY while THEIR PEOPLE get cheap power off the back of OUR HARD GRAFT?"

Go on, get the ****ing gammons frothing. Then maybe someone will ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING.

Haven't actually looked if it's hundreds of millions. Don't care. Just say what you want. No-one can call you a liar in the commons anyway.

Keir won't say that because he doesn't want to scare off the mega bucks that might flow into his pocket if he gets into power. Labour are just the Tories wearing red now.

The worst thing about the pursuit of riches is the practical side of being in that position of success.

Say you have $6bn in your account and like the worlds richest men you spend your entire life in the pursuit of making that fortune rise higher and higher. But, you will only spend X amount each year in expenditures on your lifestyle etc which is likely however many millions. Basically you have billions in the bank but your only ever practically living the life of a multi-millionaire. The vast, vast majority of the billions in fortune will spend your entire lifespan in your account doing nothing. Money that serves no practical purpose is effectively valueless. So all of our global commercial obsession is literally death, disease, famine, mistreatment, suffering and hardship for billions of people so that a handful of individuals can see one extra digit on the screen when they check their bank balance.

There literally is no point in having multi-billions

Yeah and **** faces like Bobby Kotick sit on horded cash like Smaug when that money could help millions of people.

Tory leadership - live: Truss allies claim Sunak resisted attempts to cut Brexit red tape (msn.com)
Next on the agenda beyond October and January's price hikes on energy will be what happens when the price cap is set to be changes again in April 2023. Independent analysts have forecast that next year the cap could hit £5,000. For the coldest months by this scenario elderly people on state pension would be spending 70% of their state pension on one bill.

I'm phenomenally cynically when it comes to the public and how they vote in General Elections at this point in life but to me, even from that stand point, the Tories are absolutely well and truly screwed. This is hitting parody levels of mismanagement, the cap might as well be raised to Dr Evil level 'one million dollars!'. Whether through intent or reality the energy firms are simply not going to get the money. The end result will that instead of energy firms going bust, they'll go bust and so will the public finances too. They are completely destroying any concept of the impression that had created that the Conservatives know **** all about money management compared to Labour. They were skating by from letting loved ones die alone whilst they drank Prosecco but this is pretty much them coming for the lives of you, your parents and your children as well now and somehow they're utterly incapable of grasping that the game is up.

The strains of drums, noise and fuzz-pedalled, flanged guitars can be heard faintly drifting over the cold, unheated houses in the streets of towns all over the UK....

The Conservatives know how to make money for the rich. They know piss all about running a fair and equitable society. It’s the biggest myth in politics that they know how to run the economy. They know how to sell stuff off to their mates below market value and asset strip the public purse. They’re bloody good at that.
