I seriously expect @Protocol Penguin to be right. It's going to be terrible, but the media will probably blame <spins the wheel> the Irish or something, and people will lap it up.

EDIT: What am I saying? It's 2022. Somehow the Daily Mail will make it transgender people's fault.

The UK government and its media will blame 1.) the EU, while also claiming that the situation is much worse there and that EU national governments aren’t intervening in domestic markets (not true) 2.) younger working age people for being “lazy” and spending their money on smartphones, avocados and gender realignment procedures rather than saving to pay their energy bills 3.) migrants for “taking” jobs off of “hardworking” British people who need to get second jobs to pay their energy bills 4.) the LGBTQ “lobby” somehow.

So the gov is set to basically bankroll the ridiculous price hikes until next election, instead of nationalising the energy firms, getting rid of all the shareholders & decoupling gas from electricity like any sane person would do.

        But what did everyone expect.

Might as well set that 100b on fire now and save the transfers.

Yep, it's a huge bailout to save them from going bankrupt - no wonder it's been the energy firms leading the charge for this. Moreover not a penny of it will be covered through windfall taxes, but instead the ordinary poor folk will pay it further down the line, over 10-20 years. So it's basically just a massively deferred bill for everyone.

Can't think why they're timing the bailout to approximately 2 years. Is anything due to happen in 2 years or thereabouts?

...I'm at the stage now where I just want to throttle the air out of these venal ****s in government, they are well beyond intolerable.

They know they won't win the next election so they are basically now on the track of making it a future Labour government issue
They'll smooth over the cracks until they are ousted from power then labour will have to try to find a solution

Typical bull**** politics...make it someone else's problem down the line

Freezing the next rise and bankrolling it dose nothing for the people that cant afford whats going on now, £400 a month for utility's are already here so freezing the next rise dose nothing for the poorest in the UK. if your on minimum wage and bringing in roughly £1000 month that's 40% of your wage on one bill.

They're kind of stuck if they re-nationalize power then they are admitting the last 40 years of Tory policy is wrong as that's what led them to this its been the Torys that have pushed through all the privatization

We got enough votes to get re-nationalize debated in parliament but that was refused and they released a condescending statement instead about how investment from private company's has been massively successful and without this we wouldn't have the amazing things like a rail network that's on its arse and is the most expensive in Europe, Broadband infrastructure massively lagging behind the rest of the world and sky high energy costs with no contingency in place for global events or shortages.

and of course 5) The Labour Party, despite them being the opposition for 12 years.

It’s obviously some kind of practical joke the entire country doesn’t get.

The Tories will still be blaming the Blair/Brown government in 2032, when they’re on their seventh or eighth Prime Minister.

A rethink of how the cap and prices are managed is about the best we can hope for. Re-nationalisation isn't going to happen under either the Tories or Labour at this point. Prices will 100% though never come down again from their current level.

Liz Truss culls cabinet on first day as loyalists and allies get top jobs | Liz Truss | The Guardian
The energy price from Truss is set to be announced any day now but by the sounds of this it won't actually be frozen at its current level but will be allowed to slightly increase further rising from an average price of £1,927 per year to £2,500 per year and then frozen till 2024. The planned £400 handout will continue to go ahead thereby maintaining prices at the current cap for six months but the handout isn't a 2 year fixture meaning a 25% rise to the £2,500 threshold will hit in April. The costs will be put on taxpayers backs.

And of course, any “support” will be aimed solely at pensioners, so working age people can go hang.
