All energy websites are down in the UK. No meter readings possible.

*****. Glad I randomly did mine ~3 days ago.

EDIT: Retrospectively that's overly harsh. It's not a conspiracy; it's just the sudden rush. But we've established that this is a money-making exercise so we shouldn't expect good service; we should anticipate the worst we'll still pay for.

I can't get into Scottish Power. Seems hit and miss across all sites, probably because everyone is doing it.
I can't imagine it's going to make a big difference.

It won't, if you give regular readings. I try to do it once a month. But if you're the sort of person who does it once every 6 months; the power company will "estimate" how much you used before/after the switchover and I'd be willing to bet they'll find a way to make that calculation benefit them - even if it's only for pennies a user.

Yeah, I last did mine in December...
Weirdly one of my readings (there are three rates on my meter) had gone down, so I had to send them a photo. Either I cocked it up last time or my meter is broken

That reminds me of when i moved into a property in the late 90s, british gas wouldn't accept our meter reading as the one we gave them was before the one that the previous owners had. took me 6 months of messing to try and get it sorted eventually we got back into a postion where it did add up after we used a load of gas and it was only then that they where able to start billing us, terrible company to deal with.

im guessing Martin lewis or somebody said to get your meter reading in before today as from tomorrow you will be billed under the new energy price increased tariff.

Those price rises for the energy companies - they come into effect tomorrow.

Now, of course, the amount of power you get charged for is based on the price it was, when you used it. But if your last reading was in January and your next one is in June, you're going to have a load of power usage and the power company would have to estimate how much of that was on the old cheaper tariff and how much was on the new.

Wouldn't be a huge issue except we've just come out of winter, where people use more power - but I suspect people believe the power company would, in that above situation, average out the cost-per-day and split it down the middle.

If you measure today (or recently), then when you give a measurement in summer, you'll pay less.

Ah okay. That seems messed up but I get it. The whole energy cost thing and how it's done is generally messed up anyway.

Yeah that's the one, he lives on the moon too and uses his telescope to spot consumer issues.

That's why we got a smart meter.

                                'Smart' Meter..................meh!

Another internet connected spy in the home, Big Brother is slowly creeping up on us. How long before the currently benign 'smart equipment' in our homes starts being able to reduce or cut off essential services when you've missed a payment accidentally, simply can't pay or there's been a glitch?

It's about money saving for the companies involved not the consumer.

How to save electricity and gas use is pretty damn obvious, I've been doing it for years.
